It is now a recognised custom for all trades one day every year to shut up shop and take an outing in the country or make a journey down the Bay. The butchers band together, and for a whole day desert the city; so do the grocers, the drapers, and the boot makers, and the custom is just as faithfully observed by all the leading business firms, who annually invite their employees to a treat of much the same kind. Even the undertakers are not behindhand. So far as these gentle men are able they also mianage occa sionallr to throw aside the professional seriousness and melancholy which characterise their calling, and have a cheerful time of it. The real object of trade picnics is to encourage friendly feelings between those engaged in the same calling, with the intent of fur thering their common interests. This applies to one body in the same degree as to another, and the general public may...

A BIG THING IN HOTELS. THE GEORGE, ST. KILDA. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 1 February 1887

A BIGa THIII? IX HOTELS. TuE GEORnE, Sr. KILD.L -FUox OUJ MELaOUp CORSPO.DESD T. Ill her.r you mor t, te tlottom of your sgory And never interrupt you." SoME quaint writer dilating on the IOculiar characteristics of different European people whom fickle fortune has induced to seek halcyon days ?nder a new and brighter constellation than that which shines over the land of their birth, has left it on record, t that the first undertaking of any nag I nitude on the part of a Spaniard, in a new land, is to erect a church; that the Frenchman's first idea is to con struct a theatre ; and that the English man's first and warmest aspiration is to hurriedly set about erecting a public house. There may be some truth in this diagnosis of character, and though the moral standard of the latter is not e one iota below that of the people with whom he has been compared, yet it may be freely admitted that the Englishman is more social, larger hearted, and even more gregarious than his Continental nei...
