MIRROOL. (The following notes have been kindly supplied by a correspondent at Griffith.) [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 November 1915

MIRROOL. (The following notes have been Itindly supplied by a correspondent at Griffith. 5 Settlers' Meeting. A meeting of the Mirrool Irrigationists' Association was held at the Hanwood -Hall recently. Among those present were: J. B. Broatch (in the chair), Messrs. H. R. Alexander (Chief Instructor), O'Calla ghan (Dairy Expert, Department of Agri culture), Harrison (Manager of the Can ping Factory), and Adams (Fruit Expert). Mr." Broatch, in opening the meeting, ex pressed his pleasure at seeing such a re presentative meeting. Mr. Alexander spoke at length on the benefits of having a cheese factory in the centre of the settlement. He stated that the price to be paid for milk, compared favorably with the amount paid by any butter factory. He showed that the Mir rool settlers would practically be getting a better return than the Yanco settlers, for their milk. He said that dairymen had a good time in front of them- as re gards the price they would receive for .their produce. He stron...

THE BACON FACTORY AND ITS SUPPLIES. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 November 1915

THE BACON FACTORY AND ITS SUPPLIES. The Manager of the Bacon Factory has submitted the following notes on various matters that he considers should receive attention at the hands of intending sup pliers. " I have now visited practically the whole of the Yanco Area. Unsatisfactory Conditions.-During July the weather was such that I saw many . pigs under the most unfavorable condi tions. ; The effect of these conditions would have been minimised had proper and comfortable housing and sleeping ac commodation been provided for pigs that were running in paddocks. I venture to think that before next winter this matter will receive attention. Drought, &c.-The conditions prevailing during the last twelve months have been generally unfavorable to the development of the pig industry, but, with a return to normal conditions I confidently believe that pig raising will become an important' and profitable industry upon the irrigated areas. In many of the irrigated districts of northern Vic...

NOTES FOR THE AREAS. YANCO. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 November 1915

YANGO. Crops.-Most of the hay crops on the Area are now reaching the ripening stage, and there are some very fine samples among them. A crop has just been cut at the Experiment Farm as clean and fine as could be wished; it should turn out very well. indeed-in fact, visitors who have seen it express a doubt as to whether there is any better crop to be seen any where in New South Wales at the present time. It is fully 6ft. high, and all that could be desired. A photo of this crop, with some particulars in regard to it, will be published next issue. Dairying Returns..-Dairying returns have never been higher in the history of this Area than they are at the present time. Undoubtedly these results are mainly due to the excellent growth of natural pastures. One settler spoken to during the week stated that last month his cows returned him something in the neighbor hood of £3 per head for the month. The Butter Factory manager also reports that other settlers have obtained from £2/5/ to £2/1...

PASSION FRUIT. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 November 1915

PASSION FRUIT. At the present time there is a great run on the Lee ton Nursery for the supply of passion fruit. In most cases settlers are planting these vines in sheltered places for shade and ornamental purposes. Experi ence has proved that, although subject to injury by frost, the passion fruit on these Areas can be successfully grown in shel tered places, and although its life is not a very long one it grows very quickly and makes a splendid shade, while the dark green foliage gives a verandah or trellis a very pleasing appearance indeed. Excellent quality passion fruit has also been produced, and housewives do not need to be reminded of the value of this fruit for dessert and flavoring purposes. So popular is the passion fruit that large areas in the orcharding districts of the coast are put down to the vines as a per manent crop, and excellent returns are received. Many of the orchardists in the county of Cumberland have kept the pot boiling with paifeion fruit alone while the...

THE DISC HARROW. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 November 1915

THE DISC HARROW. The disc harrow if properly used will return the farmer more profit than any other tool which he owns, and it is equal ly true .that if this implement is misused it will cause a great deal of loiss. Every farmer should understand thor oughly why he discs. The mere going over the ground with a disc harrow does not necessarily mean that the farmer is deriving any benefit from it (nor does it meant that he isn't). The farmer must understand the relation of moisture to the- soil and growth of the plant and what is necessary to conserve moisture. This is essential to the farmer's greatest success, no matter where he farms. Up to the present time the disc har row has been the most practical imple ment far the farmer to use in preparing a ^perfect seed bed. It has been demon strated time and time again that farm ers . who thoroughly disc the stubble im mediately after the grain is harvested, plough a few weeks later, disc the ground the next spring as soon as they can get ...

DATE PALM. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 15 November 1915

DATE PALM. It is understood that some very good results have-vbeen obtained from the cul tivation of the date palm on the Irriga tion Areas of South Australia, although, generally speaking, the trees have been a very, mixed lot, and not anything like up to the highest standard. In spite of this, however, yields averaging £50 worth of fruit to the acre have been obtained. A few date palms have also been planted at the Yanco Experiment Farm, but their growth there has been slow, and so far no data is available as to what the results are likely to be. Inquiries have been made with a view to ascertaining whether any further infor mation is available in the records of the Department of Agriculture as to what success is likely to attend the cultivation of the date palm on the Irrigation Areas, and the following information has been elicited: "The Department has been cultivating date palms at Pera Bore for the past 15 years, but owing to the shortage of water there it is not considered the...
