Apple Tree Borer.—In reply to a question by a correspondent of the Club, Dr. Trimble said, at the Farmer's Club : "When the borer once gets into the wood he cannot be cut out with .the knife. He must be punched out with annealed wire. The idea of destroying the post- by driving a nail into the tree is preposterous." Mr. Carpenter said: "'A simpl&j'-:medy is to remove the earth for an inch or so the last of May, and wrap a sheet of brown paper about the trunk to the extent of one fcot up. This will prevent ihe deposit of eggs." Dr. Trimble considered this plan useless. It will not keep the winged beetle from going to the crotch of the tree. Mr. Paul agreed that the bcrer will deposit eggs in the branches, but thought the paper process might bo advantageous.—Hearth and Home.

Corn in Illinois.—S. D. A.,Rossville, Illinois, writer,: We raised last year an average of sixty-two bushels of corn per acre.— This we stack up in the fields as soon as matured. It makes our feed for fattening cattle. It is hauled into the feed lots and scattered on the ground. The cattle there eat it; the hogs follow the cattle and clean up what is left. This the Eastern farmer calls wasteful; but I notice when they iaimigrate hither they soon get out of the notion of carrots, turnips, boiled potatoes, &c. Hogs have been contracted for to go to market in May and June, atS@9c. '§, lb. ; cattle to go May J, at 7f @Sc. \i lb. gross. So you see there is a profit in feeding in the West where corn has brought during the winter thirty or forty cents per bushel.

ihe Rural Neio Yorker gives the following as the method of making the English patent harness blacking which is commended for keeping leather soft, and giving it a good polish. Dissolve together over a slow fire, three ounces of turpentine, one ounce of ivery-black and 1 drachm of indigo, to be well pulverized and mixed together. When the wax and turpentine are dissolved add the ivoryblack and indigo, and stir till cold.— Apply very thin, and brush afterward. The North British Agriculturist says: "To improve the size of pota^ toes, whether planted with small or large, whole, or even cut potatoes, when the plants are only a few inches high, let the shootbe reduced by pulling up one or two, or at most three of the strongest. The tubers will conseqaently, be fewer and very much larger, in measure nearly all fit for market and the table." -It is easy to try a few rows by way of experiment. A member of the Massachusetts legislature is prepared to prove, by a calculation which he has...

MISCELLANEOUS. A MERICAN BUTTON-HOLE . OVER-SEAMING AND SEWING MA CIHNB COMBINED. MEDAL'AWARDED AT THE PARIS EX POSITION, 1807. In directing attention to tha celebrated COMBINATION BUTTON HOLE AND SEWING MACHINE, we icel fully warranted in claiming for it unguesiionahle siipcriortty over all others as a Family Machine.— The Simplicity, Ease and Certainty with which it operates, as well as tha uniform ex cellence of its work, certainly place it far i advance of any other similar invention of the age.
