The Great Convention of Road Makers [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

The Great Convention of Road Makers { Concluded from first page . ) public sentiment sufficient to sustain the commissioners in making tho necessary expenditures now authorized bylaw to complete the work . Also , that the road laws of the State meet nearly every emergency that can he imagined , and the officers charged with the execution of the same are not entirely blameless for the apparent neglect of duties which , if performed according to the spirit of the law , would work a revolution in road Improvement in many localities in the State . The peculiar character of the soil in certain sections of the State , the lack of suitable material in other localities with wbioli to construct permanent roads , were held to be , as considered by many , insurmountable difficulties . The opinion was also held : That there should be a law enacted providing for the appointment of a County Superintendent of Highways by the Board of Supervisors In each county under township organization , and by ...

What Constitutes a Good Hog . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

What Constitutes a Good Hog . As long as weight is an important factor in the hog , and determines the profit it will not be an easy matter to persuade farmers to make a change in their modi of breeding hogs for market , hut some strange ideas are often presented them for consideration , which , being too extreme in application , have no effect . An excellent Eastern journal , in discussinr . the subject , says : The show yard , as now conducted , has in many instances become a fat hog show instcm of a true test of merit as originally intend ., ! and many unsuspecting breeders invest hi animals from such prize herds , and expect tn raise such animals as the show herd—when thev utterly fall to raise a respectablc-lookini ; funii hog . The above applies only to tho farmer who is in the habit of raising hogs in . the supply of a special kind of meat , and they are very few . The Fat Stock shows give the preference to the fat hojj because it is from the fat animal that the farmer derive...

The Ayrshire Boom . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

The Ayrshire Boom . The Holstein and Jersey pushed the Ayrshire aside and edged themselves to a front place . Twenty years ago the Ayrshire held the front position as the dairy cow of this country . But the Ayrshire is a better animal to-day than formerly , and eould easily have held her place if given the opportunity . The breeders of Ayrshires did not organize and push their cows forward . When the merits of the Ayrshires are better known it will be found that they are capable of competing with cows of other breeds . It is only recently that they have been given tests , and now that the Ayrshires are being tested it is shown that they have been greatly improved in quality , and yield largely of both milk and butter . At the recent meeting of the Ayrshire breeders it was shown that some of the cows gave not only large quantities of milk , but excelled in butter production . The best seven days test showed 403 pounds of milk and nineteen pounds six ounces of butter , which is over t...

Feeding Young Chicks . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

Feeding Young Chicks . Tho majority of farmers feed cornmeal dough to chicks and expect the lit--tle things to thrive upon it . Cornmeal is excellent for them , but they require something else additional . The chick will not need any food at all for twentyfour hours after emerging from the shell , for nature makes provision for it in that respect . The second day after being hatched hard boiled egg , crumbled fine , is the most suitable food . They may be given such for two or three days , allowing milk for drink at the same time . If eggs are fed continually they will cause bowel disease , hence the food should be varied after the chicks are four or five days old . An excellent and cheap food for them is to beat up two eggs in a quart of milk , which should be thickened to a stiff dough with a mixture of one part corn meal , two parts ground oats . and one part middlings ; season with a little salt , and bake in the oven into bread , which may be crumbled for them . It will be foun...

APIARY . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

APIARY . Preserving the Purity . When a hive has been Italianized , and the new queens are about to come forth , it is not safe to always expect that the young queens will be fertilized by drones from the hives to which she belongs . It seems to be a provision of nature to avoid in-breeding , and be this correct or not , so far as bees are concerned , yet instances are known in which Italian queens have been fertilized by drones from common bees that were located at great distances from the hives containing the Italian colonies , which accounts for the fact that the workers will show the effects of the crossing . The queens are always fertilized when on the wing , never in the hives . She takes long journeys for this purpose , and it is not impossible for her to meet strange drones , on these exercises , and although she is aften in company . with a number of drones from her own hive yet it may be possible that she gives the preference to the strange drone . Of course this cannot be...

The Situation in Chicago . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

The Situation in Chicago . As we go to press the strike is on in Chicago in full force . Notwithstanding this , to tho common observer , Chicago is no less busy than when labor is moving along smoothly . But the critical eye sees differently . Workingmen are idle . Kailways are doing little , outside the regular passenger service . Incendiary circulars are scattered among the rough and turbulent population . Now for the result . A mob of from 0 , 000 to 10 , 000 men , incited by the incendiary speech of anarchists , made an assault on the McCormick reaper works , whose employes refused to join the ranks of tho strikers . As they were leaving for home a rush was made for them , and , of course , those who could not escape were pelted with stones and brickbats and wounded . An attack was then made on the factory aud an entrance gained . But a patrol wagon containing a dozen police was driven squarely through the mob , and a second wagon arriving at a critical moment , they were disper...
