Don t talk in ihe library . This has been the imploring request of the librarian from time to time probably ever since the library was first opened . The request is certainly reasonable , but we are not sure that it has ever been complied with . But why should we not have silence there from this time on ? Think what a novel scene the library would , present with a hundred or more students sitting around the study tables as dumb as Quakers ! The custom now is to have six or seven social parties organized in different parts of the room during most of the day . These are very useful for the purpose of developing the conversational powers , but they are rather trying on the quiet ones who wish to study . We know only one rule to go by in order to preserve the quiet which has been desired so long and so vainly : whenever any one wishes to speak within that sacred place let him be silent . This is a hard rule , we admit , but it is sure to bring about the longed-for lesult if it is strict...

A term never passes in which one or more students do not leave the University to accept positions which will furnish them employment for a few months only . Most of them go away with the intention of returning at some future time to finish their courses . Many do return and graduate , but they certainly have not the pleasure in their later college days that they would have had if they had continued through the four years and gone out with the classes with which they entered . We think it is always desirable , unless health or money fails , for the students to finish without intermission the coursi which he has begun . This way of drop ping back into lower classes is not a gooi one . Of course if there is any weight } reason why one . should suspend his studie for a time , the matter of like or dislike ii doing it should meet with little consid eration .

The clamors of the political campaigi have died away in an astonishingly shoi time . . The quiet of a prosperous and st cure government has settled back upo the people as if it had never been for a instant disturbed , little being left to tell ( the late desperate party struggles . Pla forms and issues are no more held b fore the nation by frantic politicians , i single day was sufficient to effect all thii But the work of educating the thousand who are to sustain the nation in a fe \ years , goes on quietly as before . It is ; u companied by no lavish display , no boasi ful utterances , no fierce and flaming bursi of passion . But for all this it is grandc and more important than any issue of th political campaign . Let the student think of this , and remember that in gain ing the power of free and intelliget thought they are heaping confusion on tli heads of demagogues . It is by the exc cise of this power that direct lying an other forms of trickery can alone be drii en out of th...

PICK AND PACK . At nine o clock on the eleventh of July , 1880 , the City of Duluth arrived in sight of Prince Arthurs Landing , at the head of Thunder Bay , on the north shore ) f Lake Superior . An hour and a half ater N and I had bidden good-bye to he p leasant circle of friends we had brmed on board , and found ourselves two one strangers cast adrift in a foreign land . & . nd a savage , desolate-looking land it was . Save the little village where we tood , as far as the eye could see was an inbroken wilderness of trees , rocks and vater . A feeling of loneliness crept over is as we gazed at the long line of bleak tills and lofty bluffs surrounding Thunder Jay , and then at the receding boat and he waving handkerchiefs fast disappearing rom view . We were really becoming a ittle homesick , when a pleasant voice at ur elbow said , Allow me to examine our baggage , please ; and turning , we Hind the voice to belong to a dapper little lan who represented Her Majesty s r...

THE WORLD'S CHARITY . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 17 November 1880

THE WORLDS CHARITY . A merry dead man lay in state And chuckled in mighty glee ; Ha ! ha ! he said , now I am dead How many care for me ! Now in good broadcloth I am clad , And my head has a pillow fine—Sometimes in sleep such splendors creep , But now I call them mine . I starved to death on yesterday And never a one would give A bit of bread ; so to be dead Is merrier than to live . But here they closed the coffin lid—Ho ! ho ! said the dead man then , Now I shall ride in pomp and pride , A very prince of men ! K .

OUR CABINET . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 17 November 1880

OUR CABINET . Most of the departments of our cabinet have no doubt heen observed by all the students ; but some remarks concerning the collections therein may be interesting and valuable . In the zoological department we have , mounted in good shape , representatives of nine out of the thirteen mammalian orders . Among these are all the North American ruminants , except the musk ox and the mountain goat . Of birds we have all the orders and all the families represented . These include over three hundred mounted specimens , and as many skins . There is also a considerable oological collection , but it is not yet in place . There has been recentl y added to the museum a very desirable feature in the shape of a series of mounted skeletons , representing all the orders of mammalia except Proboscidia ( the elephants ) , and Sirenia , which contains but species , the manati and dugong . Of the latter , a skull is present in the museum . Of reptiles and fishes we have quite a goodly number...

A Glance at the Exposition . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 17 November 1880

A Glance at the Exposition . We had the pleasure a few weeks ago of visiting the Chicago Exposition . Our time was quite limited , so we could onl y give a flying glance at the most attractive objects . Not having seen any but the first exhibit in 73 , we can onl y compare it with the first . It seemed that the novelty had worn off , and much of the ori ginal enthusiasm had died out . There was however a decided advance in fine art , both painting and statuary . Furniture , musical instruments , agricultural implements , etc ., were well represented , but there seemed to be less work done in the building in the manufacturing line than formerly , thus depriving the Expositon of one of its most attractive features . The green-house department was full as usual . There was a fine collection of insects , and also of minerals and fossils . The skeleton of a whale attracted our attention , as it was put up in order , the scapulas being in their proper places , and not stuck on the end of ...

COLLEGE DRIFT ; [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 17 November 1880

COLLEGE DRIFT ; EXCHANGES . The Volanie tells us that our seniors have a class quarrel . That is news indeed . This illustrates the saying that one must go abroad to learn the news . A local item found in the Westminister Monthly , we must say , is in very bad taste . It is this : Ye locals assiduously scratch their heads , but so far have discovered nothing but zoological specimens . It may be so , but the fact were better not published . We Hope that the comb of friendly criticism will prevent fhe recurrence of the distemper . Number four , volume one , of the Lariat , Wabash College , lies before us . The paper is opposed to co-education , which question is being agitated there . It would seem to us that there is something incongruous between the name of the paper and its principles ; for the noose has been used from time immemorial as typical of the union of the sexes . It seems to be a generally accepted conclusion that co-education is best . Certain it is that the young women ...
