I AGRICULTURAL 1 SCIENCE < - ——————— ___¦ [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 20 April 1907

I AGRICULTURAL 1 SCIENCE < - ——————— _¦_____¦_¦ THE BLUEBIRD . ( 8 IALIA SIA LIS . ) Copyright by D . Alden Loomis , M . D . This pretty songster is smaller than a robin and all the school children know him . He comes to us from the South at a time when we are delighted to see or hear any evidence of spring , and is therefore a welcome guest . His plumage is handsome . The entire top of his head , neck wings and tail is sky blue ; throat and sides of the body rufous , while under parts are whitish . When perched upon a tree he makes a very pretty picture . In flight or at THE BLUEBIRD . ( Sialia SiaUs . ) rest his note is a pleasing warble , and his tur-wee , tur-wee , tur-wee would quickly attract attention . His are not the trills of the song sparrow , nor the musical chirp of the robin , but , rather the low euphony of the flute that always charms because he is the herald of spring . They are very domestic in their habits and soon after arriving here , begin to arrange...

1 THE DAIRY 1 [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 20 April 1907

1 THE DAIRY 1 VENTILATING COW STABLES . KING SYSTI . M . In your poultry department , page 247 , an Inquiry is made about the King system of ventilation . This inquiry recalls a dairy barn that I saw in Wisconsin two years ago . It was in some respects the best barn I have ever seen ; not in point of cost , for it was a very plain and unpretentious building , but for health and solid comfort . I took a few notes of its plan of ventilation , the King system , and I hope to make practical use of them as soon as my herd outgrows its present quarters . As the building season is approaching the plan may be of interest to others . It is said to be the very best means of supplying warm , pure , dry air for all kinds of farm stock except poultry . The King system of ventilation has the distinction of being both theoretically and practically correct . If the work is carefully done it insures a herd of cows in winter the same kind of air that they are accustomed to In a June pasture . To insu...

"WHY SOME PEOPLE WONDER . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 20 April 1907

WHY SOME PEOPLE WONDER . If we remember right , there is a law upon H IP statute books of Ohio , visiting severe penalties upon fhe farmer who subtracts any of the cream from the milk that is to be sold as milk , or offered to any manufacturing concern , or trade , and yet at the U . S . Mllk Show in Cleveland the other day , ( ily Chemist Pate affirmed that the percent of fat was much lower when the milk was delivered to consumers than when it reached the city in the farmers cans . The question is , wby is not the law enforced by the city authorities , when they know of its constant violation ? The farmer can not dodge behind the legal standard of milk , and water , or skim rich milk down to the legal 3 percent of fat solids , but must sell it as milked , and if the cow sbould fail to give 3 percent milk , he is caught the other way by being pinched for selling diluted milk . Wherein sbould he be doubly mollycoddled , and the city dea . er go even unrebuked ? Again , a farmer must ...

NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 20 April 1907

NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW . The first National Dairy Show was held in Chicago in February , 1906 . The second one is to be held in Chicago next October , exact date yet to be fixed . This was determined at a meeting of the Association March 2 . The flrst show was a great event but it is determined to make this second one eclipse it in every particular . Experience gained in the flrst will enable the management to do this . The foundation has been laid for the greatest exhibit of high-bred dairy cattle , and the strongest aggregation of dairy authorities and educators that the world has ever seen . Farmers , and especially dairy farmers should make arrangements to be there . H . B . Curler , DeKalb , 111 ., is president of the Association , and E . Sudendorf , Clinton , 111 ., secretary and manager . His Chicago office is on the third floor of the Herald Building . He will answer all inquiries addressed to him . Milk and Churning . —I will give my experience about strong or bitter milk and...

B THERE THEY GO Suppose that every year from five to twenty good pigs should push through a weak place in the fence and say to you a fare-you-weil . Would you be satisfied ? Or suppose you lost on an average a calf every month through neglect to propPi erly care for them . Would you stand for it ? Then look at the procession of little yellow butter-fat globules slipping past you every day in the year that exceeds in value the pigs or calves from ? 50 . — to $ 200 . — per year according to the size of your dairy . | HORTICULTURE 1 [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 20 April 1907

| HORTICULTURE 1 DAISIES OP MANY KINDS . Almost every one loves a daisy , except the people of New England whoso farms in many sections have become so overrun with them that the plants are considered pests . Even under such circumstances the flowers are beautiftil , and when seen , as they often are along the roadsides and among clumps of delicate ferns , each blossom seems like a lovely jewel ln a handsome setting . The plants have never become a pest here , as they are seldom seen except under cultivation . There is one field a short distance from the city , n hich has become overrun with them , the seed being brought here in grass seed obtained in the East . The fleld is many acres in extent and has been practically given up to the daisies , and 1 am sure it is safe to say that during the blooming season hundreds of people visit the place every day , going away with arms full and carriages loaded with the beautiful blossoms . During their season everything is decorated with daisi...
