For the Housewife [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 July 1915

For the Housewife Rust Stains on Clothing Many of the rust stains found on clothing are the result of careless rinsing . Some of the liquid bluings have an iron l , ase which in the presence of an alkali becomes iron rust in the dry material , especially under the heat of the iron . If Prussian bluings are used , the soap must be thoroughly rinsed from the fabric before the garment is put into the bluing water . One may test the bluing to see if it contains an iron base by mixing with it a solution of caustic soda or other alkali ; shake a few minutes , heating gently . If the bluing fades to a reddish yellow color it contains iron . By adding acid the alkali is counteracted and the blue color returns . Rust stains may be removed by the use of an acid ; any one of the following is good : Lemon juice and salt with hot sunshine , oxalic acid or a dilute solution of hy drochloric acid . Rinse the garment thoroughly to remove all acid . CHARLOTTE E . CARPENTER Colorado Agricultural Coll...

Come On , Mr . Carnegie [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 August 1915

Come On , Mr . Carnegie EARLY in 1911 , if our memory is correct , Andrew Carnegie of Skibo and elsewhere appropriated ten million dollars worth of bonds to promote international peace among the nations of the world . At the same time he appointed statesmen , diplomats and men of renown to act at a board of trustees . Up to a certain point—that of gaining considerable publicity—the scheme worked smoothly . But it had one weakness or flaw . It failed to cement the nations of the world in a bond of friendship and peace , Carnegie s appropriation is annually drawing an interest of $ 500 , 000 , and all to no purpose . Looking back to 1911 it seems that the peace movement in Pittsburgh only gave a stimulus to the nations now involved in war . It is certain that Germany went right ahead making guns and training soldiers , and England spent several millions more in first line battleships than Mr . Carnegie threw into the peace pot . Every sane person , irrespective of nationality , deplor...
