A short time aince tho author lis tened to an interesting discourse by Methodist preacher, in which he related the following touching inci dent: A mother wuo was preparing some floor to bake into bread, left it for a few moments, when little Mary with childish curiosity to see what it wca took hold of the dish, which fell to the floor, spilling the contents. The mother struck the child a severe blow, saying with anger, that she was always in the way ! Two weeks after, little Mary sickened and died. The report of the commissioner of common schools of Ohio contains the following statistics : There are in this state 11,739 common schools; 647 private schools; Co normal schools and academies; 43 ladies seminaries and 26 colleges. Previous to ibe Presidential election, we had meagre report of trouble in Arkansas, but owing to the unreliable dispatches sent by the Associated Prese, but very little was known of the internal condition of that ex-rebel State. The meagre reports of the killing of Union men which reached as were hooted at by the opponents of the Republican party as sensational and intended for political effect. The Presiden tial election is now over, and we wish to present to the Democratic gaze the sickeninir picture of the crime and bloodshed over which they en deavored to draw the veil of ridicule, and, in the name of outraged human ity, we would ask them if at its sight they feel no compunction.
