Our dispatches announce the cfioice of John Jnmes Ingalls, United States senator from Kansas, as president of the senate to succeed Senator Sherman, vrho "was elected to fill that position after the death of Vice-President Hendricks. All Kansas will be pleased over the news. The ideal state, the typical commonwealth of the United States is coming to the front. The selection of Mr. Ingalls as the presiding o fficer of the most dignified and probably exalted legislative body in the world was not only a recognition of his rare qualifi cations, but it says to England that the man who declared that "there are but few Americans who do not regret Waterloo," is a representative man of the American cation and that his late speech voiced the sentiment of his country. Here's to the man who twisted the Lion's tail. LIES ABOUT WICHITA. The Kans...

Details have been re ceived this morning of resulta of the earthquake yesterda', showing the effects far more eeriou9 than thought. Editors "Who Admire and Curse our City by Turns. It is a curious fact, if cot a fact peculiar to itself, that Kansas editors in writing about Wichita never fail of stultifying themselves. "Without stopping to explain or account for this odd and particular freak it is nevertheless true. No Kansas editor visiting and writing up Wichita of late has failed to in one breath to laud the town and its people, and its business, to the skies, and in the next breath to swear that there was nothing to it, that it was all gas and wind, without any real foundation or sta bility, usually winding up with the sugges tion that their own respective towns far surpass Wichita in everything. All this was amusing until it became monotonous. The Lawrence Journal, the Topeka Jour nal, the Topeka Commonwealth...
