SUBTERRANEAN RUINS. A volume of gravels has recently been published in England under the title of "AJourney to Pome and Naples-,/lerjonn->d in 18 17, by henry Haas," fiom which we have cxtiacted the foilswing account of the author’s visit to Pompeii. **Uh cut descent from Vesuvius we proceeded to I’ompeii* about eight mile's Item Fortici. in advancing to it we pasted through Tone del Gnec, which is partly in ru>ns front a laic eruption. We alighted, and were at once in* | trod need into what appeared a fairy city, whose inhabitants by seme charm had disappeatecl. With breathless impatience and light steps, as if Jeaiful ol disturbing the genu ol the place, we tripped ever the ground, peeping into then chambers, temples and theatics: at times admiring the beatify of the pahulug, the symmetry c-I the statutes, the elegance of the architecture, or the convenience ofthe apartments. From the Connetticul Courant, THE FOEMIDAILE ATTITUDE OF KfSSIA. In a sketch of the military and political power of Russia, in the year, 1817, ascribed to the pen of sir Hobart Wilson, the writer stales, that since Alexander came first to the throne, the population has risen, by increase of population and acquisitions, iron) thirty six to forty two millions oi people; that her territory has been extended on almost every side; that her frontier is distant only about two buniited and fifty miles from Constantinople, by water, U three hundred by land, in a direct line; that Persia is at her feet; that a Russian army might sail from the Baltic through an internal navigation (rout Petersburg to Astracan, and lending on the Southern shore of the Caspian, pitch their tents within four hundred miles of the Persian gulf, from whence the voyage to the British settlements in the Bast indies, namely, to Bombay, is only from twenty four to thirty days, in both monsoons; and to Madrass but eight ...

heat. [Newspaper Article] — The Genius of Liberty — 21 July 1818

heat. GENIUS OF LIBERTY. TUESIUY, JILT 21, The mercury at salem has been up t° 98 and at Boston to g9 degrees above Zero. This exceeds the hot weather experienced here on the 12th. A man by the Dame of Charles Olliff of Westmoreland county was found dead on the bank of Goose Creek, about th ree miles above the bridge, on Tuesday last An inquisition was held over the body—the decision was that he died a natural death. Some cold provisions were found with him, and three bottles, two of which —the other empty. The fourth of July has been more generally observed in the different sec* lions of the country, than wc had reason to believe it would be, judging from the apathy that prevailed here on its ap. proacb. We are happy to find that the spirit of' 76 has not yet took its flight to the tomb of the capulets. In most of the seaports that august day was ushered in by the ringing of bells and the thunder of artillery. The same patriot* f tc glow which illuminated the breast o' the venerabl...

DOMESTIC fHAPPINESS. [Newspaper Article] — The Genius of Liberty — 21 July 1818

DOMESTIC fHAPPINESS. ' The wife and mother, who eeeke hep* pincse any where but in the demcitic circle, or from above, strays from the point where it may be found. The frankincense of a husband’* love—the grate* ful tribute of her children’s affections; the approbation of Heaven, which like the “sweet youth,” breathes its calm influence o’er the soul— these are all the fruits of domestic growth, and yield their ample bounties to all who assiduously cultivate them. Ohttrvaliont at I'eurtcore.— Having ar rived at fourscore, allow me to state some of the feelings attendant upon that advanced age. 1 am strongly attached to old habits and old fashions, even though absurd. Instead ot longing for a new coat, 1 pari with an old one as with an old friend. 1 forget some lessons, and cannot learn others. One lesson however 1 must learn, to eat without teeth. The farther we advance in years, tin, more we ate affected with both heat and cold. In early life our feelings are but little influenced ...
