NEWS OF THE WEEK. The Senatorial Couvention adjourned on the 16th instant sine die—ayes 63, noes 44. The vote on the adjournment embraced in the majority, the Edwards, Broderick, McCorkle and Roman vote, ¶ The Telegraph Line is completed connecting Stockton, Jamestown, Sonora and Columbia. ¶ Several Horse Thieves were arrested at Sonora on the 16th inst. ¶ Two men were killed and one mortally wounded in a quarrel near Sand Hill, Yuba County, in a mining claim. ¶ Great Excitement in San Francisco.—The last mail from the States brought accounts of the suspension of the house of Page & Bacon in St. Louis. The excitement in consequence was intense, and a "rush was made on the banking house of Page, Bacon & Co. of San Francisco. The Evening Journal graphically describes the scene as follows: ¶ Women with baskets in their hands burst a road through the windows. Report of the Superintendent of the State Prison. From the report of General Estell, Lessee of the Stats Prison, we extract the following: There has been received at the State Prison since January, 1851, 527 convicts, viz: For Manslaughter, 18; Grand Larceny, 381; Burglary, 20; Rape, 0; Sodomy, 1; Perjury, 4; Forgery, 6; Assault, with intent to commit Murder, 32; Mayhem, 4; Highway Robbery, 24; Murder, 11; Assisting Prisoners to Escape, 4; Assault with Deadly Weapons, 12; Arson, 1; Receiving Stolen Goods, 3; Assault and Battery, 3. Of those, 226 are citizens of the United States, and 301 foreigners. Since the 1st of January, 1851, 98 convicts have escaped. Of this number, 41 have been recaptured. Quite a number have been killed in attempts to suppress revolts, and in efforts to retake those who had escaped. Only 21, however, have been reported to the Lessee. Over $12,000 have been paid for expenses and rewards for the return of escaped State Prison convicts. The prisoners have been ...
