WHAT'S TRUMP ? [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 29 December 1860

WHAT'S TRUMP ? There are so many cards to play : So many ways to choose, In love and politics and war, That forwarding our views With ladies fair, with statesmen wise, Or men of lesser bumps. Before we lead our strongest suits, Tis well to know what's trumps. Once, worshipping at beauty's shrine, I knelt in bondage sweet, And breathed my vows with eagerness, And offered at her feet My soul, well stored w'th Cupid's wealth— A love-cemented lump: A king of diamonds won the trick, My heart was not a trump. Raving to see my rival win Upon a single rub, As he had played the deuce with me, I followed with a club! Two days within a station house, Reflecting on my sin, I found, as others may have done, Clubs very seldom wiu. Grown wise by sad experience, I ceased to deal with maids ; I shuffled youthful follies off, And turned up jack of spades; Yet still I find as dust is scarce, And smaller grow the lumps, That though the spade's an honest card, It is not always trumps. But in this world ...

A Thrilling Incident. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 5 January 1861

A Thrilling Incident. Years ago, in the deep heart of a mountain in Belgium a hundred men were working in a coal mine. Grim-visaged and dusky, moving about by the red light nf their safety-lamps, they might have been taken for the demons of the mountains once supposed by the peasants to dwell in its caves. Their work was hard, and surrounded by dangers; but their wives and children were in the hamlet above and long habit made them forget their perils.— So they might be contented aud even happy. The creaking windlass raised and lowered a huge bucket through the deep and narrow shuft, from morning till nig t, can ring men to and fro. This was their only doorway. . It was noonday and the sun shone down one side of the sha.t, and brought a glimmer of daylight to a part of the mine when Hubert Guttin, the master miner, took his place in the great kibble, and was let down to the mine many fi et below. When he reached the bottom, he commenced handing some tools and stores to Victor, a blin...

The Crest American Literary Circus— The Author of the Mount Vernon Capers. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 5 January 1861

The Crest American Literary Circus— The Author of the Mount Vernon Capers. Josephus Gibbons Jenkins now has occssien to allude, most respectfully, to an aged and venerable clown, who has for the last quarter of a century amused the million, and been petted and fondled by a select few— having, however, only recently vaulted into the literary ring. In times past he has been a stock star in the political and educational ring, but the fame won by Simultaneous Cobb and others of that ilk, induced him to abandon an arena in which he had made so little progress toward preferment. Mr. Everett is of the dignified, fossiliverous variety. He is a sort of fungus clinging to the rock of ages. He does not go forward, nor does he go backward. He is set. He is an immoveable fixture. The Sphynx of Mount Vernon. Polished and ornamental, not very useful, save in the stupendous farce of enabling a few old ladies to make a purchase at an extravagant price, which should have been made, and would eventual...

Cowardly Assault. —From a letter received from Mariposs the other day, we learn that an affray occured between Thomas Early, and Mike Mingle, which came near resulting fatally for the former. Mingle was drunk and flourishing a pistol, which Early attemped to wrest from him when he turned loose, and shot four times at him, inflicting a flesh wound in the left shoulder, and then followed it up by beating him over the head with the pistol after he fell. Mike was in jail at last accounts- Mr. Early was able to be about on the following day. His assaillant who has been guilty of several cowardly assaults before, will be likely to be taught a severe lesson, and possibly a trade a San Quentin. Apology.—We owe an apology to the Editor of the "Abend Pot" for neglecting heretofore to send an Exchange, to which courtesy we are called, not by anything appearing in the paper, for we cannot read German, but by "please exchange" written in fair legible characters on the wrapper.— We send the Bella...
