SATURDAY MORNING, MARCH 30, 1850 O«r Steamer Paper. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 30 March 1850

SATURDAY MORNING, MARCH 30, 1850 O«r Steamer Paper. The Alta California 'prepared for circulation in the United States and abroad will be ready for <U livery at our coua ting-room this morning at 10 o'clock. Tnr. Election.—- Tho county election* takes plac* Monday, throughout the State, and we presume that an occasion has rarely occurred since the people of this country assumed the reins of government, where a more general Interest in the result of the canvafs has prevailed. In this county, particularly the excitement has been very great, and from the fact that there are not only the two regular parties in the field but candidates offering themselves for tho suffragres of the people, Independent of party, we anticipate a very large poll. At the two primary elections the total number of votes polled amounted to something over 4,000. This) is not a fair test of the strength of the county vote, as very many reserved their fire for the final struggle, not caring to express th...

LATEST FROM TUB SANDWICH ISLANDS. Terrific Out at Lahaini [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 30 March 1850

LATEST FROM THE SANDWICH ISLANDS. Terrific Gale at Lahaini! The port of Lahaini, Maui, was visited by a hurricane on the 15th of February, which did great damage to the shipping in the harbor and destroyed much property in the town. The schr. Mary was driven to sea in the early period of the storm, and she was followed by the Sophia and two small schooners. During the night the Sophia capsized, drowning three of her crow, and three or four natives who were on board. Both of the schooners (names unknown) were lost, the crew of one saved. One hundred houses were blown down or unroofed — the King's palace among the number. The Polynesian of Feb. 23, in giving particulars of the storm, remarks : From all the information we can obtain, the gales that have visited these Islands this winter seem to have been of an unusually violent character; and are certainly more so than have occurred during our observation of fifteen years. On the 14th, (day preceding the gale) the bark Deborah, having ...

Tho depth of the edifice has been extended to one hundred feet, which will afford room for large saloons and lounges, together with private boxes, and other ot cetoras, which Mr. retit's experience in theatre-building will naturally suggest.
