Friday June 8 1021. THE JEWISH MONITOR Page Fifteen JEWISH PROBLEMS VIEWED THROUGH GENTILE GLASSES (Continued from Page 11). nomic iniquities charged against the Jew are not his own but are iniqui-' ties of the Gentile system. When the equitable Jewish system was dissolv- ed and the Jews were dispersed they were forced to adopt Gentile meth- ods. They need must operate under the Gentile system or not do busi- ness at all. Where now are grounds for the charge that Jews plan a super-system of economic oppression T In thus attacking the Jews the minds of Gentile industrial magnates but re- flect their own aims as in a mirror. What they dread is not Jewish dom- ination but Jewish competition. They covet commercial monopoly. It is charged that the Jews seek to win the world to Israel's faith Yet the Jews practice no proselyting although did they do so they would but be exercising a privilege claimed by all other creeds. There is no reason for fear in this matter. Trthur's ultimate triump...

Pag Two THE JEWISH MONITOR Friday June 10 1921. EFFICIENCY An Address Delivered by Dr. Henry Cohen Before the State Federa- tion of Labor at Galveston Texas May 16th 1921. Rabbi Henry Cohen stressed "effi- ciency" in his address. He said: "The dignity of labor is emphasized in all literatures sacred and secular except those that centered around ef- fete empires of the early day. The scriptures of civilized peoples are fill- ed with references to a work-day world and this will be instantly recognized when I quote from the Bible "When thou eatest of the labor of thy hands happy ehalt thou be and it shall be well with thee" and 'the laborer is worthy of his hire.' 'By the sweat of thy brow shalt thou eat bread holds good today as it did when agriculture was the largest concern of mankind. The tithe is an national levy which has been kept up by the Jewish peo- ple the whole period of its existence. When we speak of the Ma'aser tra- dition in our past we should go back to prehistoric times to the primitive patriarchial figure with whom the Almighty made the first covenant concerning Eretz Israel and who was the first immigrant Jew to enter the country. (0 THE JEWISH MONITOR Friday June 10 1921. recent convention of the Union of Hebrew Congregations at Buffalo will be recorded as one of the most successful and satis- factory in the history of this great organization. Not only however was this convention notable because of the large number of delegates present and the great enthusiasm apparent at various stages of the proceed- ings but what is much more im- portant a fine spirit pervaded the gathering from beginning to end. The men and women who foregathered at Buffalo weru earnest and eager. The papers presented were of an Unusually high order of merit and the dis- cussions moved on a lofty plane. The enforced absence of Mi. J. Walter Freiberg the president of the Union was the sad feat- ure of the meeting. The reading of his splendid report was follow- ed by the adoption of a resolu- tion by a rising vote to send him a message expressive of the re- gret occasioned by his absence and of the hope that he would bu restored soon to fu...
