NO. 10 ELGIN -- The Elgin Hospi- tal Authority has been granted an eleventh-hour reprieve by Medicare officials in the extension of Fleming Hospital's Medicare eligibility date of May 30, 1977. Medicare has given the authority until that date to allow "substantial progress" toward correcting the defi- ciencies in the hospital which put it in violation of the Life Safety Code. If the deficien- cies are not corrected, the hospital will no longer be eligible for payment under the Medicare plan, which would effectively close the hospital. Nearly 80% of the hospital's patients are on Medicare. The announcement of the two and a half month exten- sion came late Tuesday afternoon out of Congress- man J.J. "Jake" Pickle's office. TEXAS >*>' PAGE 7 Wildcats Track Take Third ELGIN - The speedy Wildcats placed third in their first track meet of the season, held Friday at Hearne. Paced by the 440 relay team, the Wildcats out- distanced all the other 23AA teams at the meet. Elgin totaled 75 points to finish third behind A&M Consolidated with lJ^'a and Madisonville with 83 Vi. Arnie Wilson, Alvin Collins, Derrick Collins, and Elroy Falke put together a first-place performance in the 440 relay,turning in a time of 44.5 on the wet cinder track. Coach Wayne Schubert commented, "It's pretty good for this time of year.... they weren't pushed." Milton Baker placed first in the 120-yd. high hurdles with a time of 15.0, and placed second in the 330-yd. intermediate hurdles in 42.0.
