SUCCESSFUL RACE MEETING. The race meeting held by St. Mary's Racing: Club at Alexandra on' Satur day last was very successful. The weather was good, considering, rain had fallen up to Thursday, arid it was thought if more rain fell it would be detrimental to the condition of the course. However, as stated, the rain held off and the course was good. Al though the entries were the bet yest for .a meeting such as this, it was a little disappointing thattwo races had only two starters. However, the rac ing was. good. There were a- goodly berof bookmakers in attendance, and punters were: readily accommodated. All details were attended to as far as the public were concerned; the secre tary, Mr. B. J. O'Brien, had-seen to that. He had the ready assistance of Messrs.I Les Webb=and Jack Penfold. FOOTBALL [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 27 April 1951

FOOTBALL Last Sunday, Alexandra met Marysville at Marysville i a practice match. It rained con tinously for the.first half, and the ground was in a heavy state. Alexandra tried 32 players, and despite the weather valuable match practice was obtained. Several new men were played, and of these, Darviniza from Mooroopna, was brilliant. A tall rangy center half back, who comes through hard, marks well, and kicks with either foot. Bill Luck, a solidly built center, from City United in the Shepparton Association, played for that club last Saturday on a two day per mit. It is easily seen why Shep parton were reluctant to release this player. He is a class -foot baller to his tinger tips. - Two of the best new men Alexandra has had--for years. Another new c*omer to show out was Ray Har kins, from the Essendon district, a rover, somewhat like Symons (Thornton) in style and appear ance. This man is held by North Melbourne, and it is hoped they will release:hif.'because he" looks the goods. Mi...

THORNTON-ACHERON VALLEY. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 27 April 1951

THORNTON-ACHERON VALLEY. With Melbourne League football under way and Waranga League to kick off on Saturday week, the tempo is fast reaching the stage when se lectors and supporters estimate the real value of this year's players and recruits, and the general opinion is that this year will be an outstanding one. Among the players themselves there is a quiet confidence that this is the year. Officials are working hard, and the enthusiasm shown is shared by all. One of the most gratifying signs is the regular attendance at training. This in itself has a twofold purpose. Firstly, it builds up what is most es sential in any successful team-team spirit. This is brought about by the fact that every member of the team is fit, and doing -his share at the end of a hard match. 'Secondly, it encour ages the officials, especially the coach, to work for the success and harmony in the club itself. Last week-end, when 44 players turned out, a scratch match was play ed with the two captains, Theo G...

SAD HAPPENING. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 27 April 1951

SAD HAPPENING. The district received a shock on Sunday last when it became known that Mrs. Margaret Potter, wife of Mr. Arthur Potter, had passed away at the Alexandra District Hospital, at the age of 45 years. The town has lost a resident who was liked by all who knew her. She was actively interested in public af fairs in days gone by. To do a good turn for anyone who need help was a strong characteristic in her make up. Yes, the late Mrs. Potter could be described as "one of the best"'---a good wife an dmother, and a true freind; the district has lost a worthy citizen indeed. The funeral took place at the Alex andra cemetery on Monday, the cor tege leaving from St. John's Church of England. 'Rev. S.
