Correspondence. OUR TOWN HALL. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 30 October 1909

Correspondence. OUR TOWN HAIvIv. TO THIS EDITOR. Sir, — Alter a week's insomnia, caused by. wor rying over the site for the proposed Town Hall, I have definitely decided that it must be in Park street, and for these reasons : 1st, I have 160 ft. frontage of vacant laud in Park street close to the present Council Chambers, whereas my holding in Katoomba street is much smaller, and not so well situated. 2nd, the Park street people are a better class of humans than the denizens of Katoomba cfrppf Trinrp iiifia11p-pHifi1 -mrn-ia iifaicriiiiniTrii' mnrp decided in their opinion of the laws of Meum and Tuem, more sober. The records of crime in Park street compare more than favourably with those of Katoomba street, but on the other hand Ka toomba street has five churches, one soda fountain, one Hoff . 3rd, The new Town Hall will be be tween Dunne's drum and fife boys and Ryan's pub, a most desirable combination. No Town Hall should ever be far removed from a pub, both on business and human...

THE BLUE MOUNTAIN ECHO. The Labor Socialist M.P., and the Almighty Dollar. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 30 October 1909

THE' 'BLUE MOUNTAIN ECHO. The Labor Socialist IVLP., and the Almighty Dollar. Before the advent of the I^abor Party as a dis tinct entity in the parliamentry arena, the lawyer politicians was its pet aversion. It was then the custom for labor candidates to denounce lawyers as 'human vampires and vultures, ' ' ' land sharks, ' ' 'robbers of the poor,' 'non-producers who feast and fatten on the earnings of others.' Some of those same labor candidates no sooner got into Parliament than they immediately set to work to become lawyers themselves. And since the lawyer hating manual worker -3'f yesterday has himself joined the ranks of those he was wont to denounce as human vampires and vultures ' we no longer here a word from them or the labor leaguers of their former picturesque denunciations. The labor socialist, as a matter of fact, has a very keen eye to his own personal advantage and enrichment whenever he gets the chance, just the same as the capitalist or any other man. Trade Union ...

What People Say. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 30 October 1909

What People Say. That many a man's popularity is due to the fact that he doesn't think aloud. What about the crowd that never think at all? That obscurit}' is the place many political can didates come from. That oblivion is the place they go to. That several lights of the present Parliaments will be numbered amongst the slain next election. I That more than one engagement is on the tapis, I but we mustn't tell tales. 1 That one promised bride has the trousseau all in I order, and the invite of the Knight errant is duly I expected. I That it takes nine tailors to make a man and I one woman to break him. I That a woman will jump at two things, amouse 1 and an offer of marriage. I That Katoomba has provided an exception. An I offer was extended last Monday evening, and the I young lady said ' I'll have to ask mother first.' I That a young man on the Mountains has taken I to indulging in Turkish Baths. THE HOME PAGE How to be Attractive. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 30 October 1909

I The Home pag-e I By Myona. How to be Attractive. The story is told of a very fickle husband who fell in love with practically every at tractive woman he chanced to meet in the street. One day he perceived walking ahead of him the fairy form of a graceful girl, elegantly dressed and moving with al most Parisian chic. 'H'm!1 qiioth he; 'I wonder if she's ?pretty r So he hastened his steps, caught up with the bewitching damsel, and — it was his own wife in a new dress ! Whether the story is true or not does not concern us here. It simply serves to illus trate what can likewise be illustrated by the following dialogue between a man and his better half — the former having been guilty ?of passing an admiring remark concerning a well-dressed girl whom neither knew. ' You men are all alike, ' retorted the wife to her husband's exclamation ; ' you are ?only attracted by dress.' ' But she is pretty.' ' No, she's not ; and you know it as well as I do. If you saw her shabbily dressed you woul...

When I Have Time. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 30 October 1909

When I Have Time. When I have time, so many things I'll do To make life happier and more fair For those whose lives are crowded now with care ; I'll help to lift them from their low despair, When I have time. When I have time, the friend I love so well Shall know no more the many toiling days ; I'll lead her feet in pleasant paths always, And cheer her heart with words of sweetest praise, When I have time. When you have time, the friend you hold so dear May be beyond the reach of all your sweet intent ; May never know that you so kindly meant To fill her life with sweet content, When You have time Now is the time. Ah, friend, no longer wait To scatter loving smiles and words of cheer To those around whose lives are now so drear ; They may not meet you in the coming year. Now is the time.
