The applications were granted. Last Saturday, Mr. Edwin S. Eowe made his maiden auction speech at the sale yards of Hyam's Commercial Hotel, Terrara. Total Destruction or (be Garden ?- ' ?. Palace. ?, T Friday, io.30 a.m. Thx Garden Palace was buntf to the ground this morning. The fire broke out about five o'olock. The loss is estimated at about nalf-a-million sterling, or £500,000. A considerable number of publio documents, prinoipaly lands occupation papers, minerals, works of art, etc., are destroyed^ ThebuUd mg was uninsured. The fire broke out at the base of the dome of the Garden Palace, at a quarter to 6 o'clock this morning. In a few minutes the dome itself fell in. Stray Notes from the Metropolis. A motion for adjournment on Thursday in tho Assombly brought on moro fun. When he goos round town listening to evory bit of gossip ho hears from all classes — because some of oven tho more respectable class cringe to him in thoir tear— and brings it on in the Sonato of tho country, founding charges upon rumour, showing an aversion to inquiry into facts simply criminal nnd waating time with idle gossip, which men of intelligence spurn, it is no wonder indeed, if a reaction should set in and John Davies should find himself carried on in its powerful torrent into n higher place in publio estimation than ho ever held previously. Mr. A. H.
