MR. RODGERS' "GENEROUS TRIBUTE." [Newspaper Article] — Nhill Free Press — 8 May 1914

MR. RODGERS' " GENEROUS TRIBUTE." Thus that smart little Melbourne weekly, " Table Talk," has a little fun at the expenso of Mr A. S. Bodgers : " A grand discovery has been made by Mr Rodgers, the Federal member for Wannoti, a constituency which rubs its eyes in surprise to find that it has got a representative) who is occasionally heard in Parliament. After six years of Mr M'Dougall's uncanny silence, Wannon ; finds the experience strange. Mr Rodgers [ has discovered a grain of senBO in a ' political opponent. The dawn of a bettor day is hinted at by tho incident. Gener ally speaking, a politician's opponents, in tho courso of rabid party enmities, quickly come to stand for all that is in iquitous, sons of darkness and children of Beiial. Therefore, Mr Rodgers' generous tribute to Mr Laird Smith is I dearer than water to a thirsty land. ' Why not grow two bladea of grass where but 0110 grew before ?' askod Mr ! Laird Brnith ; and Mr Rodgers, who was speaking, retorted, 1 Tho hon me...

Magill is presidont, opened its soason by running a stako for 10 all-aged dogs at £l/l/, and which was called the Lowan Stake. It was intended to open with 16 dog.s, but the hard nature of the ground, especially in 'he open paddocks, had the effect of deterring many owners from nominating who would otherwise have given an entry. However, the 10 dogs compoting provided lively sport for those in attendance, and during the completion of the card clever and inter- ' esting coursing was witnessed. The beaters started in an open paddock at the rear of Mrs T. Ervin's homestead at Woorak, but after traversing some dis tance up and down the paddock without starting a hare, it waa decided to ad journ to the stubbio paddock adjoining tho old lambing hut- Here hares were plentiful, and soon tho fun was fast and furious, although the specta...

IMPRESSIONS OF THE FLOWER GUILD. [Newspaper Article] — Nhill Free Press — 8 May 1914

IMPRESSIONS OF THE FLOWER GUILD (By'm.D.) As I walked in and beheld the beauty before me—flowers, flowers everywhere, and of such beauty—I was very much surprised indoed, as I expected nothing like it. For a while I was undecided which way to turn—right, left or forward. Well, I went forward ; the beauty of the tables fascinated mo so, that it was some time before I could leave them. The artistic tasto displayed in the decoration of these tables was worthy of great praise and much to be proud of, and I think the judge found it a very difficult task to decide the first and second, and the third table was also worthy of much praise. I then turned to the roses—" the goddess of flowers.'' Of these beautiful blooms there was a very fine collection in deed. I slowly yiewed each stall, charmod with the beauty before me. The cut flowers were magnificent. The dahlias, of which thero was a grand variety, were much admired. In regard to tho chrysanthemums, some of those were very beautiful, an...
