EPITOME. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 2 July 1873

EPITOME. TUe Gipps Land Times gives some farther par ticulars r« specdng the recent bank frauds at Sale. On the night preceding Gibson's arrest, Mr Lair, the manager of the bank, noticed something which aroused his suspicions. He then went over some of the b. oks with Gibson, and found that the cash did not balance within 13s 6d (short). This led to a further investigation of pay slips and other docu ments, when Mr Law took charge of the cash, and postponed further steps until the following day, on which he found more deficiencies. The defalca tions already discovered amount to .£2000, but it will be some time before the accounts are thoroughly inspected. The tampering seems to have been going on for some time, but the greatest amonnt of it has been dune during the last three months. .The Express, a Melbourne evening newspaper, has breathed its last. TOWNSHIP GOSSIP. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 2 July 1873

TOWNSHIP GOSSIP. The'late unfortunate occurrence at the hos pital, has, I see, been the means of bringing before the public the censure, and opinions of a correspondent, signing himself Prolegomena. In viewing the production, as a whole, it is hard to say which material most predominate, acrimony or untruthfulness. A sfor both ingre dients, the article is a spicey sample. The writer, whoever he may be, says, the opinions are siren gthened he felt some time ago, as to there i. ? ? ifrAno- in flip Imcnital mntt^r 1 uenii; tuuicLuiii^ -..aw as at the last election they tried to keep it such a close borough, and he suggests that the committee should resign their positions to save the institution. The suggestion is a good one, and did it not come from Prologemena, (who, I recognise as one of the minority in the 101 'to 1 contest of last year), there might be some sense in it, as I have no doubt many of the members of the committee are very tired of their stewardship, and would gladly res...

WOOL AMD STOCK REPORT. . Standard Office, Hay, v.. Wednesday. Julv 2, 1878/ We are experiencing roost delightful' weather for this season of the year — the temperature being mild, with sunny days, the country donning its spring clothing in the shape of a beautiful green sward, where the gambols, of the little lambs are to be seen, almost persuad ing one 'twere spring-tide instead of midwinter. Tracks are almost obliterated with the abun dance of grass the country has been favored with; and with the prospects before us, we have every assurance of an excellent lambing, sheep and cattle being in very fair health and condition. Although accounts are to hand of continuous wet weather up the river, causing a cessation in business, we have reason to be lieve it has only been of short duration, seeing the river, up higher, lias fallen, and was con tinuing- to do so. Since our last 'we have to report the crossing on 27th June of 3000 sheep, from Illiliawa, for Melbourne (Dunn in.' charge). T...
