GUNDOWRING. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 2 December 1887

GUNDOWRING. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)   This will be remembered as a wonderful season for grass. It is a case of grass, grass everywhere, and stock consequently are in fne condition -even those picking up their subsistence on the Queen's highway having a good layer over their ribs for once in their lives. The proposed Guudowring picnic and ball is postponed till the autumn, out of respect to the famnily of the late Henry Bell - the young fellow who met his death in such a deplorable manner the other day, and who was a member of the committee, with which his elder brother was also connected as treasurer. The Kergunyahl picnic is to take place on the 9th of December, I under- stand, so that the residents will not be de- prived of an opportunity for an outing. I hear there will also be an el fresco enter- tainement at Upper Gundowring on the 10th Deccmber. It appears that the shire engineer has     marked out seven chains of the abominable glu...

M oboug0 a & ?olluo g cntillcl. Awake! Aris ! Or le for ever fallen! --aftros. FRIDAY;-DECMBER 2, 1887. IT is doubtful whether the anti Chinese movement is not being carried on with too much zeal to be success ful. There is very little difference of opinion as to the desirability of check ing Mongolian immigration; but there will not be unanimity with regard to the best and most effective means to he taken for the purpose. It will be bettor not to get into too much of a ferment over the matter. The ques tion should he considered in a states manlike and cool and dispassionate manner. There is some danger other wise of failure; and in this, as in other affairs, in regard to which there is sure to be some controversy, it will boe well to keep in mind thelwords of Dr Johnson, " Moderation is commionly firm, and firlmness is commonly suc cessful.". In some of the proposals made for the exclusion of the Chinese in large numbers, the bounds of seode ration are not a little exceeded...
