RECORD RAILWAY REVENUE. [Newspaper Article] — Wangaratta Chronicle — 8 July 1914

RECORD iAILWAY REYENUE, The Railway Commissioners have completed their balance sheet to June 30, 1914. The total revenue is a record-£5,578,306. This is £356,035 above the total revenue of last year. Of the large revenue for this year £2,519,000 comes from passenger traffic and £2,258,000 from goods traffic, live stock and parcels traflic providing £575,000 between them, It does not, however, appear that the increase of business has given the Commissioners any addi tional profit on the working of the railways, On the contrary the year's business will show a much smaller surplus than during the recent good years when the total revenue was much lower. It is impossible at this stage, without details, to say what additional expenditure is responsible for this result. We notice that the total salaries and wages have leaped up from £2,7170,000 it 1912 to £3,102,000 (estimated) in 1914; but the figures published on Saturday are evidently in advance of the final adjustment, since they do no...
