FRENCH PREPARATIONS FOR CHINA. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 29 December 1859

FRENCH PREPARATIONS FOR CHINA. The following accounts appeared before tbe announcement tbat the French preparations had been suspended : — Tlic following details have been given by a Paris journal respecting the projected expedition to China. Three Generals are, it is said, pro jwwed for the command of the expedition — General de Martrimprey, Commander-in-Chief of the forces in Algeria, General Trocliu, and General Wimpfen. It is evident that for so distant an expedition all the men of a regiment are not equally capable of supporting the sea voyage and the influence of the climate. A depot is to be formed id one of tbe stations nearest to Hongkong or Shanghai, to replace the defici encies in the effective force. In consequence of the preparations to be made tbe departure can not take place until tbe first fortnight in No vember. The French Government, when dis playing its flag is the heart of the Celestial l^mpire, wishes, it appears, to give a high idea of its military power, and t...

GREAT NATAL PREPARATIONS IN FRANCE. The Paris correspondent of the Tuner asserts that the increase now going on in the French navy is on a scale and of a nature inexplicable by any supposition except this, that tlte Govern ment contemplates as not very remote a straggle with eume great maritime Power : — t! I am assured that there are now bmldiog, or unJi-r orders to be built, in the French dock yards 29 sliips of the line — ten of the very largest size, tiie other ten of an inferior calibre. The Magenta, of which the keel has been Lad down at Brest and which will be tiie largest vessel in the French navy, is cs'. of the former (jass, and is to hare a rw ?[ uaion ship, to be called tbe Solferino. Tlie Ituiis of four of these yeeselb are nearly or quite completed, others are in various stages of forwardness, some are not ytg commenced, but only planned or ordered; but it is estimated that tbe whole of them will assuredly be completed (barrhg counter orders) within 18 months frocs th'...
