The case for prosecution was that on ithe 21st January, Mr. Brehoney went to the seaoside leaving hIis premoises in chargo of a caretaker named Coyle. ?e called at his house on the 3lth February, nod found Coyle gone and tihe glasses weremissing. Red Cross Display at Hawthorn, O11 ononday afternoon a very suc cessful display and reception in aid of the funds of the Red Cross Society was given-in the-town hall, by the MIayoress, Mrs: E. C. Rigby. There was a large attendance. The hall and stage were prettily deco rated with flags of the allied nations. The space was divided for the occa: sion, one half being occupied by an exceedingly creditable display of Red Cross work,the different objects shown being almost impossible to enumerate, as besides providing.for the requirements of the trbojs' in the way of medical and surgical neces sities, creature comforts were not forgotten, and tobacco, pipes, cigar ettes, razors, soap and mantches,&c., were there in profusion. RENT DISPUTED. . Henry Courtney ened Albert Kane for one weeks' rent 16s, alleged to be due by defendant for she tenancy of a house inYork street. Tile plaintiff said that.he let the premises to defendant in July of last year at 18s a week. The rent was regularly paid up to 1st of Feb when h - agreed to reduce it to 16a The defendant refused to pay on the 8th of Feb, and vacated the premises. Defendant swore that ihe personally paid the plaintiff one weeks rent on Jan 20th, which had not been deducted. SHOPPING AFTER HOURS. Geo. Barrington was charged with keeping his shop open after hours. Constable M'Phorson stated that he knew defendaot, who had a butchers' shop in Glenferrie road. Shortly after 8 o'clock p.m. on the 22nd Feb. h? saw a lady enter the shop. Witness took her back to the shop, and said to defen dant-This lady has just come out of your shop with a .parcel of meat she purchased. Defenl'dant said the meat had been orderedl by the purchaser's bus bandsut he denied it. Defendant told the Bench it was a hot night, and he did it to oblige his customers. ELECTRICITY V GAS. The Mayor of Kew, and Ora. Sir H. Kelleit and Weir, representing the Kew Council, waited on the Council with a request that they would join with the Kow Council in having that portion of Barker's road (under joint control) lit with gas. The deputation were accomodated with seats on the dais. Cr. Sir Henry Kellett eaid that some time ago whIen the tramways were being by the Kew Council coi sidered, they decided to light the track with gas. Eleotricity anrd oil had been tried, but they found gas gave a better light, and was more economical. They asked tile Hawthorn Conlcil to support them earrying out an honorable agreement.
