For long his search proved in vain, and he was about to give it up as a bad job, when his eye was suddenly attracted by a figure close at hand stooping over some stone and sand, and striking what appeared to be a piece of roek. For a moment he imagined it to be a fellow-worker; ' but closer inspection proved it be more ; palpable than a shadow, and it ap peared to the miner that the shadow was the shadow of a skeleton.
