Some time ago a lively controversy was in progress between a small party who pronounoed bitter pitto.be oauBed by Bpraylng, and a larger sea tion of growers who . emphatically deolared bhat bitter pit. existed be fore spraying was adopted generally. Through 8ir John Forest, Bpeoimens have been reoeived from the orchard of Mr J. Martin, near Mount Barber, Western Australia, whioh support the negative view o£ the growers. Of these apples, one set of Cleopatra variety are off- nine-year-old trees, and have been sprayed with oil and with Bordeaux mixture the sbbbod before laBt. These are oleaa and a good marketable sample. The olber set oompriBes Oleopatra and North ern Spy varieties, off trees over 20 years old, whioh have never been sprayed, and they were badly pitted. Professor MoAlpioe is at present in vestigating'' the oauee of the bitter pit for the Federal authorities.
