The Standard SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 23RD, 1907. Mr. Thwaites. [Newspaper Article] — Malvern Standard — 23 November 1907

The Standard i_ SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28BD, 1907. MP. Thwaites. The death of Mr Thwaites, Engineer-in-Chief to the Metropoli tan BoarJ of Works, has caused widespread regret amongst all classes of the community. In truth, it has been well said that it will be hard to successfully replace Mr Thwaites. Undoubtedly, it was owing to his professional skill and genius that we owe the successful completion of the Melbourne and Metropolitan sewerage scheme, a gigantic work that was practically carried through without a hitch. Melbourne is proud of the fact that the guiding hand throughout was that of an Australian born-Mr Thwaites. The people were looking forward to Mr Thwaites giving fur ther practical and successful proofs of his engineering ability in other directions in Victoria, but, alas ! he has been called away to join the Great Majority. His name, however, will long live in the minds of Victorians, and that steps will be taken to perpetuaos the memory of one who did such excellent ser...

Glaitu foi* Support of Local Industries. PRAHRAN MEMORIALS. TO THE EDITOR. Sir,-I, with ¿tbeii^ would like to> know «hy tiie work in >cbnnection with the two Memorials unveiled in Prahran last week was not executed locally. . Both the fountain ibo the. memory of the late Dr Ramsay in the new Municipal Gardens and the tablet to the late Bishop Langley in St. Mat thew's Church of England were erected mainly by subscriptions iron) local residents, yet the work In eacjp case was done by outside firms. There are several firms in our district eapable of carrying out this class cf work, yet apparently they were passed over in ' favor of out siders- Why? One is curious to know. Our local indjstfies should receive first consideration, and ia these two cases it would be reason able for the subscribers to have expected their Memorials to have been of local workmanship. Our cry, " Australian industries first " could at limes with advantage be altered to " Oar district industries first."-Y...
