EXTENSIVE FIRE IN NEW ZEALAND. -4C-- We (Argus) learn by telegraph despatch from New. Zealand that a serious fire occurred in the town of Wellington on Sunday night. The fire, which is considered the largest that has yet happened in the town, destroyed the To Are Theatre, situated in Manner-Street, close to Cubit street, the Wcsleyan Church two hotels, and several shops. The To Aro, Theatre was quite a new building, and was considered by those who had seen it to be one of the mosl elegant places of public amuse ment in Australia.A view of the interior was given in The Sketcher Ist year, and it fully bears out the high opinion of the theatre held by the residents of the town. The auditorium, which would seat 2,000 persons comfortably, was arranged comewhat after the manner of tile Academy of Music. but was much more elegant in appearance. The theatre was built of corrugated iron, after a design by Mr. Tlhomas Turnbull, at a cost exclusive of the site. £10,000, and was held by a compa...

Sin,-1 your porrcspondent " Ifoneslly"Thad tkau prcaenu durinlg the etticig of thie Royal Commission on Closed Iouude, he would have beep spared the trouble of writlng so much bad English in defence of the Shire Council. Your report of thie evidence given is quite correct, so far as it goes, But being an abireated.roport, if necessary omits some of the less material statements, In giving my opinion that the control of the closed roads should be taken out of the hands of the councils, because it would not boe honestly exercised, I expressly stated that I did not use the term in an offensive sense ; I was speaking of shires generally throughout the colony, and not specially of the Aloxandra ohire, A commission of squatters would be very unlikely to frame a liberal Land Act, and we should not liko to trust to a com. mission of importers to make a tariff for the protection of native industry. We should say that the questions would not be honestly dealt...

VINCENT BOSTOCK; OR LIGHTS AND SHADES OF CHARACTER. CHAPTER II. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 21 June 1879

VINCENT BOSTOCK; OR LIGHTS AND SHADES OF CHARACTER. CHAPTER II. Suddenly Nero sprang up, and gazed across the river; then, wagging his tail, he turned to his master piteously, making a low whine, this, of course. drew Mr Lambert's attention and he looked in the direction indicated by his dog, just soon enough to see the insnimate Vincent sunk for the second time." "In. lad," he shouted to Nero,     who obeyed instantly, and swam to wards the spot where the boy had dis appeared.     'There was a bridge at a little distance up the river, so Lambert ran at full speed up in order to reach the opposite bank in time to assist his noble anirimal. When he arrived on the other side, Nero was swimming round and round waiting for the re-appearance of the body. At last it came up, and, darting at it rapidly, Nero seized an arm between his teeth, but so gently as not   to inacerate the flesh. Thus he brought Vincent to land, and co...
