by Mike Gannon Collegian Staff Writer The Scuba Club would like to welcome the 21 new members and the large number of the returning student body. The Club has been busy conducting all of the required pool training in the Behrend pool. The Scuba Club's first fund raisei went well, this involved anyone on campus who wanted to "Try Scuba First", the club also sponsored Freshman Orientation Day at the pool with demonstrations of the abilities of the returning divers and the first breath underwater for many of the newest arrivals at Behrend College. The Club has been diving in the local lakes and many of the new students have foud bottles, seen fish and visited some of the sunken rowboats. Many hours of air have been burnt underwater in the pursuit of certifying for. the PADI Openwater Rating which allows the individual to dive to 60 feet and almost anywhere in the free world" . The Club conducted Boat Dives into the depths of Lake Erie the 19th and 20th of September. Three boat l...

Collegian Staff Writer Drownproofing was held the week of Sept. 20-25 in the Behrend pool ir preparation for the Oct. 3rd lead lab at Presque Isle. The drownproofing, instructed by the 4th year ROTC cadets, teaches the student how to staj afloat using their own clothing as floatation devices. The instruction first consisted of splitting the students into small groups. Then, while wearing their Battle Dress Uniforms(BDU), they were instructed to jump into the shallow end of the pool and swim to the other end. There they were instructed on how to remove the BDU pants, tie the legs shut, and inflate them with air air so they would float. This is an important skill to know before traveling on the water and may come in handy at any time. The lead lab itself will include canoeing on the inland waterways of Presque Isle, along with classes in first aid, knot tying, and some drill and ceremonies. There will also be a picnic lunch at the shelter near Perry Monument. For some of the student...

Have you ever wanted to shoot a rifle? .Never had the chance? Join the Rifle Club. We meet every Thursday in front of the ROTC Office. (No, you don't have to be in ROTC). It's only $1 per week, and transportation is provided. If you've never shot before, don't worry. Someone is always there to show you. It's an exciting learning experience, and it's very cheap for students.

f Student/Athletic Stress As a member of the Penn State-Erie men's basketball team and a full-time student majoring in communications, I've discovered that someone should write a self-stress management book based on the life of a student athlete. Each fall, I find myself rushing from the classroom to the court, barely finding time to switch from loafers to high tops. During the peak of basketball season, I eat my meals standing 1 up, don't catch Monlighting reruns, and struggle to complete papers (like this one) on HHiMi—sHBHB _mTC_^_"_^ the bus to and from away games (I've become an artist at maintaining legibility while my pen and paper leap and bend with each turn of our ' Iess-than-smooth-riding bus). I know I'm not alone in my battle to balance a schedule that, due to the demands of two "seperate lives," is totally frantic. Although few people seem to recognize it, the stress facing studentis often mind (and body) boggling. Therefore, I propose that Penn State-Erie offe...

Let_*s Talk by Pastor Ray Sines Collegian Staff Writer Let's talk about the "much talked about" issue of which very little is said-CONDOMS. First, for clarification, let me state that ministers of the Gospel can not speak on this or any issue with a "truly open mind"because their minds, having been "renewed"through the Word of God, will always be biased in favor of the Scriptures. The condom, invented by an English physician named Condon, has been in existance since the 18th century. "According to some authorities (this was) a corruption of Condon, the inventor" (Dorland's III. Med. Diet., 25th ed.). Recently, condoms have been getting much publicity. Why? From the condom sales point of view this publicity has opened a way to make big dollars for condom manufacturers. For example, twelve through fifteen year olds no longer have to sneak into gas station rest rooms to buy condoms from the vending machines; now they may come boldly to the grocery counter and buy them by the box....

Smoking I am truly impressed with the rennovation of the Wintergreen Cafe. It is now a more cheerful place to eat, study, and converse. . I am also pleased with the section of the cafeteria reserved for smokers. The rest of us who don't smoke can then be spared from this nusiance. There are people, however, who do not appreciate the reasons for the sectioning of the Wintergreen Cafe. Those who smoke assert their constitutional right to enjoy a cigarette - wherever they are. However, I iearned in law class that a person's desires do not qualify as rights when they interfere with other's rights. When smokers have- available a way to enjoy their cigarette without disturbing others, yet continue to disregard the rights of nonsmokers, I would mark the event as a fundamental insult to the constitutional rights of non-smokers. When individuals from among the students, faculty, and staff of Behrend either disregard or do not endorse this new concept in the Wintergreen Cafe, they s...

f R.E.M.: File Under Fire by A. Thomas Mamaux Collegian Staff Writer This space was originally reserved for The Cure's new album 'Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me'. After I got my hands on R.E.M.'s new album 'Document' The Cure went straight to the trash can. I got 'Document' two days before the deadline was due and was inspired to stay up late to type this review because the album is that good. I listened to the first song 'Finest Worksong' four times in a row. "The time to rise has been engaged/good better best to rearrange/ I'm talking here to me alone/I listen to the finest worksong/the finest that I've ever heard." Michael Stipe, lead singer, is telling the truth. It is one of the finest songs. Michael Stipe sometimes on TV seems arrogant and long-winded, but really he is just plain amazing He is the driving force of R.E.M. His lyrics are not always clear cut, but they always show some of his own idealism. R.E.M., like U2, was one of the greatest underground bands. Now whet...

Coffee with the Provost by Kristin Delovchrz Collegian Staff Writer As I slowly edged my way through the half closed door, I realized that the Coffee With the Provost had already begun. I perched myself onto the table in the far corner and began to listen to what was going on. To my amazement, this meeting was nothing like I had expected. To be honest, I thought this would be the type of thing where we listened while he talked. Never have I been so surprised. Not only was this meeting informative, but it was also ftfn. The discussion began with highlights of Behrend's latest renovations. The new apartments for the upper classmen started up the conversation. Nothing but good things were said about the new addition to the campus. Another event that received adulation was the leadership retreat Congratulations to John Downey and all involved for a job well done. A newly paved parking lot, added playing fields, and renovations to the theater and Turnbull building finished off th...
