Poultry and Bees [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 14 March 1896

Poultry and Bees Eggs or Chickens W : ERE one Is about to start in any business venture , he begins to study ways and means—the best start for the least money . So when Mr . Farmer , or his wife as the case may be , decides that it would not cost a bit more to feed a fine flock of thoroughbred fowls than it does the common mongrels , he begins to ask which is the cheaper , to buy eggs for hatching , young chicks or grown fowls . In getting a start in Leghorns and Plymouth Rocks I have tried all three methods and can say something for and against each . Eggs are really the cheapest way . If one buys of a reliable breeder so that they are reasonably sure of fertile eggs , well packed for shipment , and have a good incubator , either feathered or wooden , they can get a start in pure-bred poultry for a small amount of money . But , as you see , there are several ifs . One cannot count on their chickens before they are hatched . I have had eleven chicks hatch from thirteen eggs which ha...

Our March Sth party will be on its way when this paper reaches its readers : Chicago , 111 ., February 16 th , 1 S 90 . Howard & Wlison Publishing Company , Chicago , Illinois . Gentlemen : I have been ou the colony lauds this trip now nearly a week , anil although a resident of California for several years , I can truly say I never before enjoyed such beautiful weather and glorious sunshine . Even as I write on this quiet Sabbath day , the birds are singing merry songs , and the very air is laden with a sweet aroma of violets and almond blos soms . The wild flowers in the valleys and on the hills are beginning to lift their heads to the sunny skies , and the balmy south wind has brought forth a rich carpet of green on the hills and as far down the valley as the eye can reach . To the eastward the Sierra Nevadas...

She Hath Done What She Could [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 14 March 1896

She Hath Done What She Could By Katie Didd . Let me turn my thoughts to the scriptures tonight , For I am weary and looking for rest . I bave labored all day and I cannot seeThough I tried to give the Lord my best—The grand results I had thought to see , When I laid my plans for the work of today ; But Ill leave It all with the Lord and trust That he will not spurn It away . What comforting words : She hath done what she could ; I find them here as I read tonight , I knew It would rest me my Bible to read ; I always find it the way to the light , I never have turned from It empty away , Nor lacked for a crumb when I sought for it here—A crumb that would feed my hungering soul , And would tell me that I had a Savior near . And I am sure that my work today Will not be lost , though It seems to be . If I can but hear , She hath done what she could , From my Savior s lips when he reckons with me . O , Father , I pray thee to help me to know The work that Is mine , from day to day Till I...

Best School Age of Children [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 14 March 1896

Best School Age of Children T HE age at which a child should be sent 1 to school depends much upon the child , but more upon the school . A delicate or nervous child should not be too closely confined . Indeed , there are few children under ten years of age who can endure six hours confinement daily , without Injury . The moral and physical development of our children are of the highest importance . Yet how little attention is given to these matters ln our schools . The aim seems to be to fill their heads with facts and figures . If kindergarten games and methods were used more in our district schools it would be a great benefit to the younger children , even if they have passed the kindergarten age . But we must not <; xpect too much from the overworked , inexperienced country school teacher , who has all grades , from the kindergarten to the high-school . Usually she has enough advanced classes to occupy all of her time . The little ones are hurried over their lessons ,...
