THE GRANGE . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 November 1907

THE GRANGE . Grange organization began in Washington , D . 0 . in 1867 , the first subordinate grange being formed on December 4 th of that year in a small room In the department of Agriculture . From this beginning , the movement spread until there were subordinate granges in nearly every state in the Union , numbering hundreds and even thousands in many states in the late seventies . In the East granges still continue to flourish and multiply but there seems to have been a gradual loss in interest and membership in the western and northwestern states . In our own state , -Minnesota , there were at one time over 600 subordinate granges , and an active and influential state grange . Today there are only a few subordinate granges scattered throughout the state , but the state organization Is still kept up , with the following officers : Master , Mrs . Sarah G . Baird , Edina Mills ; Secretary , Mrs . Augusta J . Adams , Minneapolis ; Treasurer , Chris Varley , Big Lake ; Lecturer , F...

WOMEN'S WORK FOR THE SCHOOLS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 November 1907

WOMENS WORK FOR THE SCHOOLS . In view of the fact that women have Some form of school suffrage in Kansas , Michigan , Minnesota , Colorado , New Hampshire , Oregon , Massachusetts , New York , Vermont , Nebraska , North Dakota , South Dakota , Montana , Arizona , New Jersey , Connecticut , Ohio , Utah , Idaho , Delaware , Wisconsin , Wyoming , Illinois , Oklahoma , and Washington , the unsanitary condition of school buildings and grounds generally , particularly in tho rural districts , is a disgrace to the sex . One would suppose that enough mothers would take an interest In the school buildings and surroundings , where their children spend more than half their time during many months of the year , to insure their being made comfortable , clean and sanitary . Few country school houses can be comfortably heated in winter , the pupils seated nearest the stove suffering from the heat while those farthest from It shiver with cold . And no schools have any means of ventilation . Toilet ...
