The Champion Road Grader . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

The Champion Road Grader . In the trial of road graders at Springfield during the Road Commissioners convention last week , it was demonstrated that machine-made roads were superior to all others . In our report of the several machines working on a road designated by the committee in charge , the Champion Road Grader was at work and was not left in the lurch . The managers of this machine hold , and correctly , that if the water cannot reach the ditches by tlie easiest route , the work is not perfectly done . If this water collects in channels iu its course to the ditches , gullies will be created obstructing travel very seriously . Freezing in winter will also break down the sides of the ditches . Hence the more perfect the gradient the more perfect the nature of the road . Experience has shown that in road making the first cost of the perfect work in respect to grade and ditch is less in a series of years than the cost of a poor road . Hence the best road is the cheapest . It is t...

The Great Convention of Road Makers . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

The Great Convention of Road Makers . EDITOKI .. T . REPORT . One of the largest bodies of representative men ever assembled in Illinois to take into consideration questions of importance relating to road making , assembled at Springfield last week . There were over 400 delegates , mostly representative farmers , as well as representative Commissioners of Highways . The convention was harmonious throughout , except for the interjections and wrangle of two political lawyers , one the dishorner , the other the statesman of Waukegan . The convention , however , was not a good place for political lawyers . The mass of the delegates were there for work , and not hair-splitting on parliamentary practice . The convention was called to order by Col . Charles F . Mills , Secretary of the Board of Agriculture . The officers elect of the convention were E . M . Pike , of McLean County , Chairman ; 0 . C . Hicks of McDonough , and Phocion Howard of Vermilion , Secretaries ; M . C . Tappan of Gr...

How Rains Fertilize the Soil . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

How Rains Fertilize the Soil . The rain performs a double purposethat of supplying moisture and of adding fertility to the soil . How is this done , and how may we observe it ? When the ammonia escapes from the manure heap , being lighter than the air , it rises , and though the proportion distributed in the atmosphere may be small , yet it amounts to a considerable quantity when we consider the many sources of its loss . W ater has the capacity of absorbing ammonia . If the weather is very dry the ammonia will rise above the plants . For this reason it is supposed that plants do not have the power of appropriating it through the agency of the leaves . But as the rains come down , the ammonia which the water absorbs is brought down with it and carried to the roots of the plants , and the more porous the soil , and the finer its condition , the greater the amount of ammonia it regains from ohe air . The air also contains nitric acid , which is due to the action of electricity on the ...
