Will It be Profitable . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 2 April 1870

Will It be Profitable . In arguing the advantage of constructing the Belvidere and Illinois River Railroad through our County , we have remarked that under the operation of the law passed by the last session of tho Legists lure , known as An act to fuud and provide for paying the railroad debts of Counties , townships , cities and towns , the road can be built without einbarassmect to those towns which furnish i t with aid iu the form of bonds . Let us examine more minutely into the operation of that law . Let us take as an instance the township of Pieice , and ascertain by the most reliable data and estimates that are available , the sum that we may expect will be required of the tax payers , and see whether it „ will prove profitable to vote the aid or not . Every person recognizes the advantages ot railroads , and no one is so churlish as to grudge an Investment of some of their means in such a railroad , if it is going to prcve profitable . The question is , can the town of Pier...

DeKalb County School * . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 2 April 1870

DeKalb County School * . SBPKBINTEXDENT S REPOKT . Sycamore March 28 , 1870 . SYCAMORK In education , as iu all things else , a good foundation Is an absolute necessity . That it is not always laid , and the individual goes through the world sometimes with credit to himself , is no argument against . t . — A man may have a liberal education and be a drone ; a cipher in life . Another may not have acquired the ability to read or write even , and yet rise lo distinction . Is there an argu ment in this for dispensing with schools ? Let two children be placed upon an intellectual and physical equality , gifted alike by nature , at manhood educated the same , would we not expect—would we not know they would stand upon the same plane , and be equally well prepared to grapple with , and overcome the difficulties of life ? Of course we do . But how otherwise should their educations be different ? As , then , one s success in life , other things Icing equal , depends entirely upon his traini...

The First American Flag . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 2 April 1870

The First American Flag . At the last meeting of the Pennsylvania Historical . Society Mr . William J . Canby read a paper on Tho First btar-bDangled Banner Made in America , and Who Made It . He discovered , in tracing the history of this national emblem , that the first instances when the stars and stripes were unfurled were at the siege of Fort Schuyler , August 17 , 1777 , and upon an occasion just about one year prior to that time . The brig Nancy was chartered by the Continental Congress to procure military stores in the West Indies , during tbe latter part of the year 1775 . While at Porto Rico , in July of the ensuing year , the information came that the colonies had declared thenindependence , and with this inlbngption came the description of the nag that had been accepted as the national banner . A young man , Capt . Thos . Mandenville , set to work to make one , and successfully accomplished it . The flag was unfurled and saluted with thirteen guns . When the brig Nancy w...

FARM GARDEN AND HOUSEHOLD [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 2 April 1870

FARM GARDEN AND HOUSEHOLD Sowing Wheat Barly .. The uncertainty of raising this grain in our section has prevented many farmers from trying to raise it , their crop often beingonly from three to five bushels toone of seed sown , and frequently almost a total loss caused by the weevil or rust . Oats are sown by many , but this great objection to sowing them are the grass crops that follow , which are less than -where wheat is sown . I have for the past seven years raised from ten to fifteen bushels from one of seed sown . The method pursued by me has been to thoroughly plow the ground in the autumn , and in the spring , as soon as the ground is thawed to the depth of three inches or more , and is partially dry , I take the team and harrow it over . The surface dries rapidly after being moved . In a day or two we harrow again , and BOW the grain and harrow it in thoroughly . Sometimes there will be snow-drifts along by the walls and fences ; these can be hastened away by passing over ...

The Penalties of Great Wealth CINCINNATI , March 21 , 1870 . EDITOE TIMES : —I find the following paragraph going tbe rounds of the press : Tho Fat Contributor has made $ 10 , 000 out of hia lectures this winter . He would have made more if he could have lectured and tended door at the same time . Where the paragraph originated I know not , but it has caused me a great deal of trouble and annoyance . Aside from the clamor , oi creditors which it has raised about my ears , I am besieged with begging letters from all sections of the country . I never realized before the penalties and vex- ? ations attending the possession of great wealth . Every mail brings appeals from a horde of needy applicants imploring me to give , declaring that I could not possibly miss the insignificant amount they ask out of the wealth I have amassed . 1 have been compelled to employ a secretary to open and read my letters , for if I undertook to do it myself I wquld have little time for anything else .
