Hog Notes—By a Practical Hog Man . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 March 1911

Hog Notes—By a Practical Hog Man . A . J . Lovejoy , Roscoe , 111 . This is the 9 th of February , bright and cold , with about six inches of snow on the ground . We are just having our first 1911 litters this afternoon , so if this page is somewhat muddled it can be accounted for , as the writer ; is dividing his time between the office and the farrowing pen —mostly the f a r r o w i n g pen . This is a trifle early for pigs to come here in Northern Illinois , where it gets quite cold . It is no trouble to save the pigs when farrowed , but it will require eternal vigilance for a month to keep them taking enough exercise so that they will not get the thumps . We will have several February litters this year and many in March . It is always well to have a few early pigs for customers , yet they are much harder to raise than April or May pigs . We wish we could raise enough pigs each year to fill all orders and customers wants , but we have not been able to do so for many years . Each ...

SWINE FEEDING [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 March 1911

Separator Advice . In the last issue of The Berkshire World some suggestions with regard to the use of the hand separator were given . There were one or two other points that ought to be emphasized along this same line . As has been suggested before , it is extremely important that the separator bowl be warm before the milk that is to be skimmed is allowed to enter . If this is not done the milk is chilled and the globules of fat lose their fluid condition , and are not susceptible to the action of the centrifugal force that brings about a separation of the butter-fat from the heavier fluid or the milk . After the bowl is started , one must bear in mind that a constant steady motion must be maintained throughout the entire process of separation . It is generally thought best to run warm water through the bowl before the right degree of speed has been attained . This raises the temperature , and at the same time prevents the partial separation of the first inflowing milk . It must be...

Tennessee Ranks High in Berk shires . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 March 1911

Tennessee Ranks High in Berk shires . Hickman , Tenn . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : The outlook for the Berkshire breeders of the South was never so encouraging as it is at the pjesent time . The demand for \ v-ii bred Berkshires of good quality is by far greater than the supply . Will say that I have been breeding pure-bred Berkshires and selling them for breeding purposes for the last ten years and have never once regretted that I landed on the grand old Berkshire , and have had no thought of giving them up for any o £ the other breeds . To let you know that my foundation stock of Berkshires was bred along the proper blood lines , will say that I have used stock that came from the herds of such noted breeders as N . H . Gentry , W . S . Corsa , James Riley & Son , E . J . Barker , J . W . Russwurm and other noted breeders , I have sold and shipped Berkshires into most all the Southern States and into some of the Northern States , and am glad to...
