We are authorized to announce that the assem bly ..ivich took place in our town on the 15th inst., was adjourned to Saturday, 5th August next, by which time certain important information elative to the advantages offered emigrants to Brazil will be received. P We learn that our Police Jury recently adopted certain Ordinances relative to the police of the freedmen in our Parish; but we are not aware of their provisions. Such a measure will doubtless be applauded, inasmuch as most of the neg~'es begin to indulge in indolence and idle ness bordering on vagrancy, and it is best to ar rest a too great license while anticipating the mo ment when the former slaves will be enabled to change employers, which will be next Ja...

Pierce's gin-house in the Parish of Rapides, caught fire and burned down to the.round; twf hundred bales of cotton which wer under its sheds were entirely consumed. This terrible catastrophe is thought to have re sanlted from the carelessness of the n gro boy wly was placed as a guard over the cotton, in ac cidentally letting his pipe fall upon it. Price of Freight Reduced.-By regrence to the notice of the steamer Pauline, in another column, it will be seen that this boat will her. after transport cotton to New Orleans at $1 25 per bale, which is a reduction of $3 75 per bale on former rates. Many complaints have been made in regard to the high rates of freight. The steamer Pauline now makes an offer which will no doubt attract a large shaae of public patronage. Blelock & Co., No. 1...

e Vol. XIII. . Landry, La., September 23, 1865. No. 15. - -~ ..n' (From the MebPrpolitaN Record, Sept. 2.) TrD TRtU POLICY OF THE SOUTH. We have on more than one occasion referred to the infamous designs of the Radicals towards the Southern States and their unceasing efforts to prevent the res. toration of civil law therein. These de. signs were manifested particularly in Mis. souri, Tennessee, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina, which they have persist. eantly represented as disloyal, as rebellious, as still inimical to the Union, and as bit. terly in antagonism with it as when they fought for the establishment of the Con. federacy. We will not stop to discussts question in its details; it is enough for the North, as it certainly should be sufficient for the Radicals, to know that the war is at an end ; that the Union has been res tored by might, that the Southern people accept the arbitrament of battle and what. ever may be their feelings, sympathies or desires, they are now re...

Vol. XIII. Opelousas, St. Landry, La., September 30, 1865. No. 16. REPUBLICAN PROGRESS. The telegraph is bringing us inte:igence of the progress of the Republicans in the North, which leaves no room to doubt that the most emphatic terms would fail to exaggerate the monstrous persecution and oppression with which they are deter. mined, if possible, to treat the South. Not one spark of magnanimity, not one tittle of charity, not a trace of manliness, not a shadow of mercy, relieves the intensityof their demoniacal malignity. Nothing short of the crushing policy of President John. son, and the compelling of him to'treat the Southern Statee as conquered provinces; to confiscate the whole property of their white inhabitants, and reduce them to a serfdom a million times worse than any that the most mendacious, most imagina. tive and most voluble of them ever painted as the lot of the negro; to give to the ne. gro the privilege of the franchise, and to take it from the white man, will sati...
