WKDNKSDAY KVIW, JINK 20,1872. . .. Scientific .Note*. A fungus which grows on the calcareous rocks of Florida is said to possess narcotic properties, and lo be used by tho natives to some extent as a substitute for tobacco. (Dr. Isidor Wells.) Woman's milk, when the food is in* snflicient, shows a diminution in the but ter, casein, sugar, and salts, while tho al bumen is increased. The change occurs in four or five days. (E. Dccaisnc.) The decay of wood is generally supposed to be caused by the decomposition of the albumen contained in the sap, and from this decomposition results a poison which, be ing in juxtaposition with the heart, speedi ly induces decay in it. Another cause is the slow oxidation, which attacks both the sap and the heart, but particularly the latter. Uy impregnating the wood with creosote both of these causes of decay are avoided, and the iron bolts and spikes employed in joining parts together arc likewise preserved. Professor Waklyn states that filtration of w...

When to cut Wheat. i . Th u _s_! --"ft! among farmers is, to let wheat stand, before it is cut, until the straw is entirely changed in color from green to yellow and the grain has become hard and nearly or quito dry. Numerous experiments have been made in this coun try, but more particularly in England to determine at what period of ripeness it is best to cut wheat, having in view the great est yield of grain and it of the best quality It is Well known to those who have investi gated the subject, that the ripening of tho seed consist* entirely of chemical processes which we cannot here attempt to explain that are of importance to bo considered in order to mnke the most of the crop after it has been grown. The immature grain of wheat, in its early stage, is found to be tilled with a milky fluid, which gradually changes into consistence from this milky state to one more firm and solid. These experiments havo been instituted to determine with accuracy at what period of this change the ...

Vy Dear Colonel—A month's absence from this city and consequent accumulation r,i business and correspondence have pre vented an earlier reply to yours of the 23d u'litno. Your letter asks—" What is the duty of Virginia at the present lime ?" That question is a very grave one, and of the highest dignity, far above all personal consideration and party policy. If ever there was "a Niobe of Nations," Virginia is now a Niobe. Bathed in tears and draped in mourning as she is or ought to be, at the burial of her rights and past power and glory, it is about as proper and decent for her to be mingling in the cabals of parties struggling for office and patronage as it would be for a widow of yesterday, whose husband's corps is lying in her cham ber, to receive the calls of lusty beaux, or to accept tickets to midnight halls. She is my mother Stato and the mother of States ; and ...
