BY STATE TELEGRAPH. [Newspaper Article] — Pacific Appeal — 17 August 1867

BY STATE TELEGRAPH. All the accounts that comc to us, relative to the meetings held to listen to the remarks of Governor Gorham, are to the effect that they are the largest and most enthusiastic ever held in tho State, not even excepting those during the heat rebellion, when, as now, the Hessians, who are ever ready to work for pay, were endeavoring to destroy the Union organization. Every Union paper in the State supports the Regular Union State Ticket, headed with the name of George C. Gorham. Every Union leader of any prominence in the State supports tho Regular Union Ticket, headed with the name of George C. Gorham. The masses of the people support the Regular Union Ticket, headed with the name of George C. Gorham. All signs of disaffection are vanishing before before the progress of our nomineo for Governor. Wherever he has gone ho has made friends, and has dissipated, like snow before a furnace, all tho calmnies his enemies and tho enemies of tho Union party, have promulgated ...

POLII CAL, [Newspaper Article] — Pacific Appeal — 17 August 1867

POLII CAL, We set fourth tho whole Union Ticket this week, and shall use our influence to get it clected. This assertion may seem strange nnd the position assumed by eolored Americans in this canvass for the succcss of the Gorhaui ticket may seem anomolus, but it is just as essential for colored men in the State at this particular time to work and give cooperation to the friends and supporter# ol the Union party in their endeavors to sc cure this State front the copper-head rule, as it was for the brave colored men in the field to help put down the gigantic rebellion. It is estimated that tho colored population of this State is Bix thousand, nnd that number of any class of citizens all clamor-! ing on one side can wield a powerful influence over tho minds of undecided voters, in their barber shops and other vocations, and placcs where they may come in contact, or in discussion with reasonable white votccs. ! Hence we want the whole six thousand colored citizens in this State to make...

For the Pacific Appeal. C ommunicat ions. [Newspaper Article] — Pacific Appeal — 17 August 1867

For the Pacific Appeal. C ommunicat ions. Idaho City, Aug. 6. Mit. Editor : — Times here are (lull. Business is sickly. The late fire caused a suspension of all business. This has been j very unfavorable for mining, the spring be- ; ing late and fast failing of the wate. Not- ; withstanding our town has again been built up as if by magic, many arc still hopeful that the mines will pay as they have done in 1 the past. I soo nothing to justify such' hopes. Creek claims that payed well and g.vc employment to hundreds of miners, | have failed to pay this season, anil arc nearly i abandoned by the whites. The Chinese are the principal miners here. The quartz mines in this country, so far as heard from, j arc not reliable. Some few have made money out of them by speculation and the purchasers have failed to realize fifty cents on the dollar in invested money, and have left in disgust, and if good hill claims can be struck, and a reduction made in the priec of water, this camp may survive, ...
