Eastern News. [Newspaper Article] — Marin Journal — 28 June 1862

Eastern News. Marin County Journal. San Rafael, June 28, 1862. AFTER a provoking silence of two weeks the telegraph commenced work on last Sunday, and sent over the wires a few items of news from the theatre of war; and then another breakage occuring, ceased operations until Wednesday, when news up to the 25th was received. A heavy fight had taken place on the Mississippi river, above Memphis, between the fleets of the Federal and Rebel gun-boats, which resulted in the complete route and almost destruction of the enemy. The city of Memphis surrendered on demand. The Stars and the Stripes was run up over the Post Office — and general submission to Federal authority by the citizens. From Richmond there is no word of the movements of McClellan. On the morning of the 25th at daylight he was attacked by the rebels, but as they found the Federal army ready and prepared to receive them at every point, they returned to their trenches. A Richmond paper says the battle at Charleston, on the 1...
