Report on Land Titles in California, [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Transcript — 30 July 1850

Report on Land Titles in California, BY WM. CAREV JONES. (Concluded.) 12. It does not appear that any j»dicial formality has been observed for the designation of limits or boundaries of each mission; the extinguished order established them arbitrarily, without any other rule than that of a prudent consideration to the distance from one mission to another, in proportiou as the spiritual conquests went forward; and this mode has continued the practice unto the present time in all the peninsula. 26. The income, revenue, or stock of such mission settlement is confined to the tillage of the field, and raising of cattle, the harvest and increase of which the Indians enjoy in community, under the administration of the missionaries, (who truly constitute their spiritual and and temporal fathers,) in such manner that the Indian labors when so directed, and the product of his toil is returned in the abstemious substance and humble clothing of those families, and the overplus applied to the di...

miscellaneous. [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Transcript — 30 July 1850

Miscellaneous. Courteous. — Senator Clemens of Alabama, in the fore part of the session, made some foolish and unjust remarks in reference to the condition of Northern factory operatives, which have caused a good many hard hits at him from the class he so little understood. The Senator, however, takes their retort in good part, and we presume, from what he has now learr.ed of their capacity, will not again offend. The operatives of the Utica Globe Mills, having organized a Library Association, senr on to the Senator from Alabama a notice of the enterprise, in which there were pointed allusions to his previous remarks. In return, he has forwarded to each member of the committee a valuable book. The Oazette states that this happens to be the first donation to the Library. — [Albany Register. Outrageous.— We learn from the Mail, that Miss Abby Foisom, the fearless and indefatigable reformer and philanthropist, was forcibly and ignominously dragged from the abolition meeting at Cochitua...

Investigation of the official conduct of the President of the Common Council — The Committee from the Common Council, appointed at the request of Councilman Strong, to inquire into charges made against him by the Mayor, and by this paper, met yesterday at the Court room of Recorder Washington. The counsel for the people asked the Committee to state the manner in which they would conduct the investigation. Councilman Tweed stated ths t the witnesses wou ] d be examined under oath, and be subject to cross-examination — that no new charges could be brought against the defendant — that the questions to be settled by the committee were, the truth or falsity of charges published by the Mayor in the " Placer Times," and other charges made in the editorial columns of the " Sacramento Transcript." After some discussion about the propriety of proceeding at once to an examination, the request for further time was granted to the. counsel for the people. Dinner to Judge Thomas last Evening. [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Transcript — 30 July 1850

Dinner to Judge Thomas last Evening. A most elegant affair came off last evening at the Columbia Hotel — a complimentary dinner having been given to Judge Thcmas, by the Bar of Sacramento. The tables were most tastefully set, and about 35 were present on the occasion. Almost every luxury that could be thought of was on the bill of fare. The utmost harmony and good feeling prevailed throughout the whole, and after the cloth was removed, E. J. C. Kewen, Esq., who was President of the occasion, arose and delivered the following address : Gentlemen: The honor of presiding over this festive occasion, is a distinction I most gratefully appreciate.' We have met not for the common purposes of hilarious display, nor as a mere idle pageant to subserve the wanton caprices of an hour, but under the influence of feelings and emotions that warm the heart, dignify the mind, and ennoble the existence of man. We have met with an entire unity of design, and under the promptings of a common impulse, t...

For the Transcript THE VOICE OF THE PAST [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Transcript — 30 July 1850

For the Transcript THE VOICE OF THE PAST BY GLYCUS. " The music of Carryl was like 'the memory of joys that are past, pleasant but mournful tv the soul." — Ossian. Voice of the Past ! what memories start From their sleep in the dreamy soul, As thro' the lone halls of the mouldering heart Thy solemn echoes roll ! Thou tellesl of years when the heart vas young, And the spirit sung there its joyous song; Or ever the delicate chordi huu been trruug By pain and guilt and wrong. Or ever the strings had been unstrung By the jarring grasp of mad despair, Or the rude touch of care ! Where are now the friexds that we lov'd In the glorious times of old ? Some, from the places they gladden"d, remov'd, Sleep on earth's bosom cold! Voice of the Past ! thy murmurings clear Bring them before us in beauty again; And others from whom we have parted appear To swell the shadow-train; And others that once were unspeakably dear, But the rocks of strife, the shoals of neglect, Their hollow friendship wrec...
