The Hereford Brand, Friday, June 5, 1908 Which Will it be? Is the Panhandle to be settled and owned by actual settlers or will the nabob be the owner and these vast fertile Plains become a tenanted sec- tion? It is to be regretted that the land is being sold in such large bodies thus debarring the small far- mer. One hundred and sixty aerea should be the present day slogen. Stock this amount of land with a few hogs, ten dairy cows, a cream sep- arator, good work stock, first-class farm machinery, chicken and child- ren, then stand off and watch results. An equipment of this kind could be had for something like $4,000.00, which would pay for itself every five years and support a large family if they would only practice industry and economy. We are in possession of the facts and figures to prove the above statement. (The above was found on the edi- tor's desk one morning this week. Evidently the writer is a farmer and the questions he asks are worth the study.—Editor.) Notice to Boys....

The Hereford Brand, June 12, 1908 ■OR men had ever had the pleasure of witnessing one of these popular and exciting contests, but had often heard of them. The present con- test would not have occurred for possibly a week or two yet on account of the death of the bad- ger from a wound received in its capture, but fortunately a returning claim holder brought in another early Saturday morning from the breaks of New Mexico. When it was noised about the streets that an- other badger had been caught, arrangements were at once made to "pull off" the fight. At 6 o'clock a large crowd had assembled in the Purcell Arena, where the animal had been placed in a cage, and where all these pop- ular exhibitions are given. The dog, a large white, well-built bull had been in training for some weeks and he was keen for the fray. There was some delay occasioned by a misunderstanding on the part of the special guests of the construction company, but this gave more time placing of bets, which were at fir...

TI fertforá Braid, June 12, 1N6 TWO STORMS VISIT VERNON (Continuad from Pas* One) doing much damage to city property and growing crops. Almost every bouse in West Vernon was damaged while out-buidings, barns, windmills and chimneys were demolished. Only one serious accident occurred in the city, which was the complete wrecking of the house of O. B. Dow- dy, in which his wife suffered bruis- es of a very painful nature, but will recover. This home is a complete wreck, it being torn to pieces and the family suffered a total loss of everything, including furnishings and clothing. A ride over the west side of the city Monday morning showed very plainly the work of destruction. Many beautiful hornos moved off of their foundations, telephone wires down and almost every windmill and tower blown away. Many barns were demolished and it is a miracle that more livestock did not suffer. Nearly all losses in the city are covered by insurance and the local agents were kept busy all day Mon- day. ...

Subscription Price 1.00 per year strictly itt advance Our good fathers selected profes- sions for their sons and husbands for their daughters. The brightest and most hopeful sons were turned into doctors and lawyers; the dull ones were turned into the pulpits and farms. The result has been empty church pews and hollow gran- aries. Just why they thought that the boy of little promise and who carries a sanctimonious look on his face would make a better preacher than doctor or that one with a dull eye could lay off straighter corn rows than the son who aspired to the bar, no one can ever tell. fifty: u- 12 The Hereford Brand, Friday, June 12,1908 KENTUCKY AND TEXAS (Continued from Pace On«) nature and without contamination. Now about the toil. It is as good as the best. It is a dark chocolate color and the depth is from three to six feet. I saw nice wheat grow- ing, and alfalfa, of course. There was¡nothing else growing except the grass. I saw some nice gardens. Jhe season there is almost a month later than heres they were only planting their Indian corn, kaffir corn and milo maize. We saw nice stuff that was raised last year, and the farmers report themselves in a very prosperous condition. It occurs to me if there is a place on earth that a lazy man could farm it would be there, because, if he is a little farmer, he would have nothing to do but to hitch up four horses and get on his plow and driv: his team until they reach the corner. Then turn them around and go to the next corner, turning about four feet at a round, and drop his Indian corn, kaffir corn or maize about...
