Hardin-Simmons' cowboy tennis races for ring Men's tennis team in competition for American Southwest Conference title by Foy Meyer Staff Writer The mere thought of the Hardin- Simmons Cowboys taking the court is enough to strike fear into the hearts of tennis players around the world. Tennis may appear to be a relaxing form of exercise yet when it comes to the men of Hardin-Simmons University and their run for the American Southwest Conference title it is a matter of serious business. This year's supply of talent has led the Cowboys to a stunning confer- ence record of 5-1. Overall the Cowboys are struggling with a 7-7 record but the fight for the ASC title remains alive and well. The Yellow Jackets of Howard Payne University are the only team standing between the Cowboys and their championship "We rings. Howard Payne prevented another Cowboy conference champi- onship only one year ago when they defeated the Cowboys in the 1997 NCAA regional tourna- ment. This year however the Cowbo...

Take time to do a little "fall cleaning jj FB Reflections by Laine Walker It's amazing what soap and water can do. The cleansing power can make a 3-year-old child sparkle and a car look brand new. These commodities hold an importance in our lives and carry out duties on a daily basis. Their power is often belittled. Just as our bodies and transportation vehicles need constant "washing and waxing" so docs our inner self. Our souls need more than the careless motions we some- times assume will do the job. The essence of our being needs a good cleansing to make it sparkle. Our souls arc much more precious than a commodity. Yet they are often the thing most neglected and belittled. First things first then. Picture your soul. What docs it look like? What docs it hold? Or can't you find the light switch? Often clouded by decisions circum- stances and emotions the room containing every detail and flurry about us gets a little dusty. It is not abnormal. Rather it is precisely the perfect ti...

Familiar sounds surround supernatural message by Amy Miles Staff Writer DC Talk's gigantic jump in style from Free at Last to the grammy winning Jesus Freak a few years ago put an enor- mous amount of pressure to produce the next best thing in Christian music with Supernatural. However the success of the album cannot be categorized by its cutting edge approach to pop alternative music. The album would fall short when viewed from this perspective because it's not meant to transition the group into a new style as Jesus Freak was largely due to its innovative style Supernatural can- not be reviewed or approached by the lis- tener in the same manner. After listening to the album a third time carefully the question I asked myself in light of the success of Jesus Freak was "Why try to fix a good thing?" The album itself is one that is extremely difficult to center around one style. The eclectic tracks range every- where from driving acoustic guitar sounds similar to Jars of Clay on "It's ...

On the Verge brings wit and sophistication to stage fry Barbara O'Neill Special to the Brand Eric Overmeycr's On the Verge opens Thursday October 8 at Hardin-Simmons University's Down Centre Stage Laboratory Theatre. The three main characters are intrepid 19th century lady explorers who embark in 1888 for Terra Incognita somewhere cast of Australia and west of Peru. The three heroines gradually perceive that they are on the verge of time as well as space. With each chop of the machete they traverse farther and farther into the future. As they drift out of the Victorian Era they "osmose" Burma Shave the Red Chinese and Blue Sky Ventures. They lose McKinley Cleveland and Taft ("You know those Ohio politicians with muttonchops?") But they also capture the illusive Ike and Nixon friend to the Red Chinese "a Dickensian character who looks like something off the bottom of a sea bed" accord- ing to the trendy Fanny (played by Missy Heintz). The leader of the group is Mary played by Billie ...

i ) J ) We've got spirit yes we do how about you? HSU fans all fired un v wmwmmr u u-r. - . :r- ma 11998-99 squad by Steve Able Staff Writer Hardin-Simmons University athletics is at it again. Currently soccer volleyball and football arc in the midst of competition. I'd like to encourage you the average stu- dent to take an active part in becoming the best fan you can be. I went straight to the best sources to find out what a great HSU fan is. First I had the great fortune to inter- view Captain HSU. Who is the man beneath the mask? He's possibly the most intrigu- ing fan I have ever seen. I asked him about his costume change. He said "I observed the incredible spirit of the freshman class. I knew this would be a special year. I wanted to do something to honor that spirit to consume its energy to be a catalyst to more spirit. Thus the new costume. Plus Wal-Mart had a good deal on fabrics." I asked the Captain a.k.a. Superfan what inspires him. "Fan support cheering is all encour- ag...

i M!i vMmmwMmmvSm Cowboy Football vs. Azusa by Chance Sampson Staff Writer The Hardin-Simmons University cowboy football team beat Azusa Pacific University 30-0 Saturday Sept. 26 after spotting them 17 points in the first quarter. The Cowboy's opening drive was promising until an APU defender stepped in front of a Billy Poc pass intended for Mitch Abies and returned it to the Cowboys' 1 1 yard line. Azusa's offense wasted little time run- ning it in bringing the score to 7-0. The Poke's next drive resulted in a quick punt. Azusas's offense drove the length of the field but had to settle for a field goal due to some stingy goalinc defense. The Cowboy's next possession stopped prematurely as a bad exchange between Brad Boyd and Cameron Cracgcr gave the Cougars the ball on the HSU 16 yard line. Azusa ran it in with only a few ticks left in first quarter as a stunned Shclton Stadium watched their Cowboys fall behind 17-0. The Cowboys thought they had turned things around when Brad Boyd ...

Monsters spaghetti and memories of Mom Reflections by Laine Walker Maybe you have never written a letter to your mom or dad but it is one of the joys of having parents. No matter what you write about they tell everyone how well you arc doing and how incredibly smart you are. They laugh at the incomprehensible jokes and still love you. Trust mc it docs wondcrous things. Most moms and dads just want to sec their chil- drens' "true colors shining through" as the commercial states. I encourage you to make the holiday season an especially warm one by expressing your thoughts to your parents. Remember your mother was the one who scared away the monsters under your bed and the only one who knew how to make spaghetti. You arc both a little older now but she still wants to help you frighten away the scary monsters and make you dinner. Now that we are becoming adults wc need our parents' friendship more than ever. To help you out here arc some random letters I have written to my mom: Dear Mom...

HSU professor living the "jolly good" life Greetings from Harlaxton Grantham Lincolnshire England and the United Kingdom. Life is jolly good over here and we arc having a grand time. Cultural differences and similarities abound. But we continue to investigate and grow as wc experience this "green and pleasant land." I have learned to drive on the "proper" side of the road in my used 1987 Ford Sierra. No wc do not have these particular models in the States but they do drive well and wc sold it to a professor who is coming here next semester. I am scared to come home and start shift- ing with the right hand and drive on that "other" side of the road now. Another equally interesting cultural experience is to find a parking space in a land where there arc really too many parking spaces. The car parks arc often just as entertaining as the driving. I won't mention nearly trash- ing the entire automobile in a ditch in the North York Moors. Oh it slipped. Life is interesting over here . . ....

Simmons Classic on Video Campus Pigest fry Sarah Wilson Staff Writer Simmons Classic an auditioned vocal group in the Hardin-Simmons University School of Music is the central focus of a video created by Dr. Loyd Hawthorne and John Best who will also direct the video. The video entitled "A Christmas Festival of Lessons and Carols" is modeled after the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols of the King's College Chapel in Cambridge England. The program is a worship service in com- memoration of the Christmas season. It tells the story of events from the fall of man to the offer of salvation by the birth of Christ through scripture readings and music. Classic first performed the reflective service at HSU in 1993. Several public schools from the Abilene area have already taped the service and local television and radio stations have broadcast the service. Best and Hawthorne contemplated the idea of taping the service for a broader audience beyond Abilene after realizing the effectiveness o...

ItATuTLHiitviunuTuVMjHblSPI Nursing students get hands-on experience by Amy Miles Staff Writer The Hardin-Simmons University nursing program alongside other local universities provides college students with real-life nursing experiences. The program itself is organised as a two-year program for juniors and seniors. Before entering the intercolle- giate program students are required to take certain courses for eligibility during their freshman and sophomore years. They also must maintain a specific grade point average in their prerequisite course work. Rebecca Coffee a senior HSU stu- dent in the nursing program agrees that the program successfully prepares stu- dents for the future. "The first two weeks in the pro- gram are sort of trial by fire. We are taught basic skills of nursing and arc required to perform them regularly" said Coffee. Students in the program also partic- ipate in clinicals during their final year of study. This portion of the program is very structured and is r...

1 1 Social commentary film more than pleasant by Bryan Tuck Layout Editor out of 4 Change is an important aspect of human existence and many people have a difficult time accepting that. This is the idea behind Plcasantvillc a magnificent new film that at first may seem to be just making fun of 1950s television. Far from it the film is both an intelligent social commentary and a genuinely funny and very entertaining comedy. In the present day a young teenager named David (Tobcy Maguirc) a TV trivia expert loves to watch an old show called "Plcasantvillc." The show presents a nauscatingly sweet and "pleasant" sce- nario similar to that of such shows as "The Donna Reed Show" and others. David probably watches to escape the problems of his world. His sister Jennifer (Reese Withcrspoon) on the other hand embraces the stereotypical culture of her generation. One night as David prepares to watch a "Plcasantvillc" marathon he gets into a fight with Jennifer over the remote. When it is smash...
