The New Zealand Strike. [Newspaper Article] — Coolgardie Miner — 22 November 1913

.The New Zealand Strike. Union officials- on this side , of the Tasman-Sea are naturally keenly in-, t-tested in the New Zealand strike. So far, however, little has been done to - suporc it. The waterside workers sti|l persist in their determination not to irta,i nr~ unload vessels bound for New Zealand ports. Otherwise) the attitude is rather one of expectancy than, of ae - rive assistance. The Federation of Labor .has fulminated against the) new Maorila'nd union which has been form ? ed to carry on the work. It has also besought tluf Prime Minister (Mr.. Cook to 'prevent New Zealand cargo from being lauded iu Australia.' Not being quito insane, Mr. Cook. will. take no such action. The Federation, of Labor, however, has little influence. union'1 tho unions, its extreme \-iews, and. the eccentricities which they in stigate, are a source of embarrassment rather _ than of assistance to the move ment. ' The perennial . cry, 'Unionism in danger,'* is bcAhg' raised. But it falls very fla...

Returning Officers. [Newspaper Article] — Coolgardie Miner — 22 November 1913

:.\y Returning Officers. No- stone is fteing' left .unturned by - the Goveriiment in its atempt to retain 'its position at the coming elections. 'The Opposition are announcing unspar ingly a circular which has oeen 'issued by tliq Premier to retift'ning officers, with respect to their 'selection of pre siding offieers -and poll clerks. It is assumed that the political opinions of these geintlem,en are known^ and the returning officers'- are instructed to see that, they are equally divided. That Ss to say, if the presiding officer is a Liberal, then the 'poll clerk should be a ? Labor man. Hitherto, the general instruction has been that persons of pronounced political opinions were to l)e avoided, rather than otherwise, in making these 'appointments, and doubt less many of the returning officers will' continue to act on this sound and pru rient principle. There is no: cerfaiuty tua:t the -political principles which a ina-H |n-ofease.s arc those by which his -conduct- is ? actually gu...

The Death Rate. [Newspaper Article] — Coolgardie Miner — 22 November 1913

- The Death Rate. At one time the death rate of Sydney and suburbs was one of the lowest in the( whole world. Since ? the doings of July last, hpweyer,-^ we. have -f altered all that.' The death rate has steadily' advanced, and men who' ought to know' again eom.es back to the normal, and nof then, unless greater care, is taken to safeguard ;the heal'rk. of the people from such assaults .'asTtlipse to which- it has recently be-en ' 'subjected. :* 'in' the month just ' dosed, '? there ; were 076 deaths, whereas ' th^'-tiverage for 'the ?Octobers of thte previous five 3'ears was only 602. The .death ..'rate was 11. '6 7 per 1000 of population, 'as' against- 10.-41 . in tie ; prOsvious fire years. Of course, ic may very properly be objected that, the mortality returns for one month are toq slender a basis on which ko generalise. Nevertheless, the dea'tlV rate of August, 11.99 per 1000, which was 3 per coat, .above the average -of tho previous quinquennium, was also disquiotingly high. I...
