Gone Before. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 21 October 1893

Gone Before. A few days of wwiry watching Wiih u moilier'fi tender care O'er Lhu child bo soon l» l«ave you Fwr a world more bright nnd 'fair. And limv your he.-irt did tlirnb and schu, as you Wiitdieil his parting h.vnth, And saw him enter the Unknown liy the dim avenue of Death. And with trembling heart you pray'd That, the Lord hi* life would spare, And loive the precious ba'oy boy A littlu lonjf-T in your care. But word had gone forth from theThron', That summons tliat all must obey ; And the child so dear to your heart Was cold, inanimate clay. And now the sad journey by rail, For the absent father said you must Take the little breathless sieeper And bury him with kindred dust. So you trarolled to Shoalliaren, For it was to that place you wont, To give up all possession Of the gift which was only lent. But if you trust in .7esUR always, You will nmet him by and bye In the land where is no sorrow, And where children never die. IVY. N., 10-20-93.

The meeting held in Sovmi last Saturday evening by the representative for Shoal liaven was very gratifying in more than one respect. Three-fourtbs of the number of persons who attended were Mr. Morton's supporters, and the attitude of tlie meeting gave ample evidence of their approval of the member's line of action up to that time. As usual in his addresses to his constituents, Mr. Morton on Satur day night was pluin aiid straightforward. Though the statistics with which he sandwiched his address when dsaling with the general taxation proposals and the present condition of the colony's finances were stinewhat tiresome, as all such quotations generally are, to the average auditor ; jTet the whole tenor of his utter ances showed that he had studied well ?what he was talking about and that he had no little concern for the possible effects of legislation generally. He appeared that night exactly hi keeping with what he declared when he previously : appeared before the electors m Nowra, ...

The Dairying1 Industry. SOME NEW FIGURES. In the course of his address to constit uents in Nowra on Saturday night last, as outlined in our Wednesday's issue, Mr. Philip H. Morton, M.L.A., referred at length to the development of the dairying industry and to the steps which he thought it would be best to take to make the export trade a success. He read new figures, showing the condition of the in dustry up to date. The total dairy stock now in the colony was 800,000, and con sidering that not many years ago the people of the South Coast thought they had a monopoly, those figures were im portant. Milking cows in 1892 numbered 343,477, and the present year the number ?was 365,110. Fat beasts numbered 254,000. The number of people dairy ing was 13,000, and the number of fac tories 254, with plant and machinery of the value of £130,923. The butter con sumed within the colony last year was 18,340,0001bs. Bruce, and in the afternoon Church of England by Dr. H. K. King(for the Rev. L. Parr.) ' Mr. Bruce's sermon had special refer ence to the loss the Presbyterian Church lias just sustained by the lamented death of Dr. Steel: The text was taken from 2nd Samuel, 13th cb.., 14th v., ' The Lord hath sought him, a man after his own heart.' The preacherdwelt at great length on the characters of Saul and David, show ing that both had sinned greviously, but that the latter's deep contrition and humble sense of dependence on God won for him the Divine favor denied to the rebellious and unrepentant Saul. David was deeply conscious of, and sincerely confessed, his weakness, and by thus being drawn nearer to God his weakness became afterwards his strength.
