THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. "Vox populi, vox Dei.' FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 1850. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 22 March 1850

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. " Voxpopuli, vox Dei.' 3«ÏDA^5ÎÏEOT28rÏ86d. THE progress of the cultivation of the "Vine in this colony is so intimately con- nected with its prosperity, that we need make no apology for again recurring to the subject. In our last we made a few re- marks upon Distillation with reference to the vine, but our limited space would not allow of our so fully discussing the subject, as its importance demanded. Earl Grey, in his reply to the Monster Memorial, ob- served that if the hopes of raising the va- rious articles of Mediterranean produce could be realised, it would doubtless be of great benefit to the colony ; and then re- marks that such enterprises never are and never can be advantageously undertaken by a G-overnment, whose duty is " limited to giving every FACILITY and security, that a Government can give to individual indus tpy and enterprise." We perfectly agree with his lordship in his . opinion thus ex- pressed, and ask no more, nor do our vine grower...

Progress of Discovery. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 22 March 1850

Progress of Discovery. We find that public rumour with re- gard to the results of the Pelsart's voyage, was not so erroneous as usual. We have been favored by Capt. Scott with some few particulars, together with the master of the vessel's report, which we subjoin. Capt. Scott has in this instance, acted with his usual praiseworthy energy in en- deavoring to open up new fields for the enterprise of the settlers, and with un- usual generosity has made public the re- sult. Had an expedition been sent out by the Government to explore the coasts, more attention could not possibly have been given, or more concise instructions been furnished to the parties in charge, than those of Captain Scott, with the view of ascertaining what resources our shores possessed. It might naturally have been expected that self interest would have in- duced some concealment as to the precise localities where the different articles of commerce discovered were to be looked for by succeeding adventurers, but to ...

SIAM. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 26 March 1850

SIAM. In tliD Mauritian, of September 6, we find the following details of the execution of a distinguished personage in that king- dom: The King of Siam lately caused to be executed by the hand of the public execu- tioner, the Prince Kroum-Soun-Yat first minister of state and his own paternal uncle. It appeared that for some time this un- cle of the king had been at the head of a conspiracy, having for its object the de- thronement of his nephew and his own elevation to the throne. Accused of trea- son by several of his perfidious accomplices and convicted upon testimony of which the accused admitted the accuracy, he was con- demned to suffer death at the public place of execution. The chief executioner, armed with a ponderous club of sandal-wood, began by inflicting upon the back of the neck such a violent blow that the prince fell pros- trate and insensible. The assistant execu- tioners then came armed with similar clubs, and broke all his bones, such being the kind of death which...

The Mormons. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 29 March 1850

The Mormons, We want to call the reader's attention to the new and most extraordinary position of the Mormons. Seven thousand of them have found a resting place in the most re- markable spot on the American continent. Since the children of Israel wandered through the wilderness, or the crusaders rushed on to Palastine, there has been nothing so historically singular as the emi- gration and recent settlement of the Mor- mons. Thousands of them came from the Manchesters and Sheffields of Europe to join other thousands congregated from Western New York and New England boasted descendants of the Pilgrim fathers -together to follow after a new Jerusalem in the West. Having a temple amidst the churches and schools of Lake county Ohio, and driven from it by popular opinion they built the Nauvoo of Illinois. It be- comes a great town. Twenty thousand people flock to it. They are again assaulted by popular persecution ; their prophet mur- dered, their towns' depopulated, and finally their te...
