BENALLA NEW YEAR RAOES.. : The new year races wore held on the Benallamracecourse d'n Monday last, Ne.* Year's Day this year.falling on a Sunday. The attendance was not very good,. a ciroum stance easily accounted for, owing to the lateness of the harvest this season, which is usually housed by Christmas, and those en gaged in farming pursuits are glad of a little relaxation after so much hard work has been successfully performed. Nevertheless, the races were successful in a financialsense, and after paying all liabilities about £13. remains in hand, to go (as Mr Hoskin naively puts it) "towards paying off the national debt" on the racecourse, which is thus reduced to something under £50. The stewards were Messrs . Hoskin, Jests Watts, and A. Robertson, and these geritlemen, as usual, were indefatigable in their exertions. Mr A. EXTRAORDINARY CASE OF SUICIDE: OnWednesday last Dr. Rowe, the coroner, held an   inquest at the Happy Hunting Ground; near Brankeet   Creek, on the body of a Mrs. Catherine Jane Cropper, aged 56, who died from the effects of poison, self administered, on the 26th inst.     The following evidence was adduced:-   Richard Cropper deposed.-I am a miner living at Brankeet Creek. The deceased was my wife. I was   married in 1840 or 1841. We have lived together   ever since happily. I was away once for twelve   months. The last time I saw my wife alive was about twelve o'clock on the 26th inst. My wife then was   standing at my own door. She was then in good health, and seemed to be right and happy in her mind.
