OUR SWAN REACH LETTER. Saturday, August 26. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 29 August 1882

OUR SWvAN REACH LE'TTER. (rCOn OURn OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Saturday, August 26. "Success to the Tambo" has been the toast echoed and re-echoed during the last few days, and although applied more par ticularly to the new steamer Tambo, it might, with equal propriety, be coupled with the rich and fertile district on both sides of the Tambo river, the solitude of which is rapidly being broken in upon. Everywhere can be heard the sound of the woodman's axe and the woodman's song but not the song "Wooduman, spare that tree." Many un ancient monarch of the forest has fallen low within the last twelve months. It is therefore very much to bhe regretted that the new steamer did not get up as far as lossiface on Thursday, as those visitors who have not been up the Tambo would have seen a flue sight, and those who had seen it previously would have noticed a great change. However, I hope our Bairnsdale friends will soon have another opportunity of visiting our beauti ful river. Many persons betwee...

TIIE CWARLNE EGYPT SLoenox, August 24..,' Sir:Garnet Wolseely has commenced his advance iito the interior. -The ad 2vance'guard of the first division, cosri ::istiiig of a strong force of cavalry anid a detachment of artillery, marched from Ismailia this morning, and arrived uiop posed at El'vMagfar, a -billage on the Suez and Cairo line of railway, about 10. miles. from Ismailia.--The. 'They are firmly entrenched in the village, and their position- is defernded by 60 guns.--Arabi Pasha's following is daily, diminishing, and his popularity appears :to ,be waniiig fast. The population, in the provinces distant from the scene of recent. military operations: are beginning to manifest a decided inclination to sup port thej'Khedive. OUR TAMBO CROSSING LETTER. Saturday, August 26. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 29 August 1882

SOUR TABO CROSSING LETTER. S(FROM OUR OWN CORRESBPONDENT.) Saturday, August 26. The welcome signs of spring are ilow ap appearing. The grass is starting to grow, the oats are coming up and the wattles beginning to bloom. The light showers with warm days, are exercising a beneficial. influence, and we hope soon to see some improvement in the pinched, poverty stricken animals who have survived the hardships of the winter. Mining matters too promise to be brisker about here than they have been for some years past. Mr. Tierney has gone up to the Haunted Stream to work with Mr. Brodribb on the reefs taken up by the late Mr. Polick. Mr. H. Sandy has been prospecting there and found another gold-bearing reef, the merits of which have yet to be tested, but which looks well; and I have heard of several intending prospectors who will start shortly to explore that part of the country. I trust their efforts will be crowned with success, as, if good reefs are opened, a con siderable population w...

The Advertiser. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY, THURSDAY AND SATURDAY MORNING. Bairnsdale, Tuesday, August 29, 1882. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 29 August 1882

The Advertiser. PUBLISHED EVERY TUvSDA?. THUISDAY AND SATURDAY MORNIWNG. Bairnsdale. Tuesday, Auqut 29. 1882. His Honor Judge M'Farland presided at the Bairnsdale County Court for tie first time on Saturday. The list was rather a lengthy one, but before two o'clock the business was concluded with the exception of the jury case. The eulogistic remarks of the press respect ing the expeditious manner in which his Honor gets through the business are well deserved. When his Honor Judge M'Farland took his seat on the bench, Mr. Greene, as the- oldest solicitor practising at the court, on behalf of himself and his professional brethren congratulated his Honor on his elevation to the bench, and the judge responded in brief but suitable terms. We have been requested to intimate to persons having accounts at the Re ceipt and Pay office, Bairnsdale, that unless they cell to receive payment thereof by the 31st August, the accounts will be returned to Melbourne, and some delay will take place in...

OUR 'TA1 110 CROSS(MIA'C LETTER. (PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT) - Tuesday; August 29. I hear on all sides such bitter complaintsa of the bad'state of the Omeo road that I feel d;lsirous of making them known in hopes the Tambo Shire Council may to somaethiog to. w ards iiiprovig it. It is quite evident that some months must elapse before the valley road can be opened for general traffic, and ina the meantime the old road is ?wearin? into holes and bad places to such ail extent as to resider, tra;olling on it .both difficult and danigeroas. "Even" when the valley road is completed to the Tambo Crossing allythat portion of the present road fronm thlencto the shire boundary upwards will hosveto be used till a fresh grant and completed survey' will enable the originally projected road to be carried up the west bank of the riverto Omeo, and only this morniing ~Ir.:'Mitchell, of Tongio, one of the Omeo shire councillors, remarked that that portion of the road was a disgrace to any shire. I am glad to state that the spring is set ting in unusually early, and the grass is making rapid growth:, We had a splendid fall of rain yesterday, which s'ill'do 'an im mense amount of good. A imeeting of the Omeo Racing Club will tarke plnce on Saturday next, 2nd Septem ber, for the puirpose of taking iinto con sideration the advisability of, erecting a grand stand. before the next race meeting Opinions are' very much divided : o" the question, some members contendis g .that the time is not'yet ripe for such a stiucture. It is quite evident. that a decent structure cannot be erected for less than £i60, and the club should be certain.that the proceeds from the stand annually will cover the interest on the outlay, before proceeding: with its erection.
