VALEDICTORY. A gathering of lending gentlemen of the town was held at Mr Dulrimett's Victoria Hotel, Tatura, on the occasion of Mr A. E. Adams' transference to another district. Mr S. Murray made a very happy chairman. Mr Moran sang "Let me like a Soldier Fell," in his usual capable mannier, and also sang a duett, " Larboard' Watch," with Mr Adams. Mr Dtunieltt favoured the company with some splentdid selections, included in which were " I Seek for Thee in Every Flower," "Mona," "My Sweetheart when a Bov," and it is need less to say that the singer created a furore among his listeners. Mr Murray next sang the " Grccn Grass grew all Round" very well, and was succeeded by Mr Brooke with "Killaloc." The lchir man then proposed the health of Mr Adams, and in doing so expressed pleasure at his promotion, and wished him future prosperity. The toast was drunk with musical honors. THE N OVELIST. [COPYRIOnHT. TALAMUD; A Strange Narrative of Cen tral Australia. FOUNDED ON NATURAL FACTS, I.VAN DEXTER. CHAPTER XV.-(CONTINUED.) 'Within a few inches of where Stanley was lying the 'flood waters had crept up and it was his outstretched hand touch- I ing the cold fluid which had roused him from his slumbers. The moon was shining brightly, and' he instantly realised that another great freshet must thave come down the river. Calling his companions, the camp was at once removed back to the highest point on the, island, but that was not now more than two feet above high water mark.? The horses were secured = and tied close to the camp, and they evinced by their actions a knowledge of 'the danger which threatened them. "It is three o'clock, lads, so that I think we are safe until daylight," Strangway said. "It does not seem to -be rising." " Yes, it is," replied Stanley, as the waters'reached the late camp-fire and began to hiss amongst the glowing embers. The stream was r...

ROMANCE AND ADVENTURE. (COPYRIGHT.) COLLEGE JACK. A REMARKABLE, YET TRUE STORY OF THE Penal Records of Van Dieman's Land. CHAPTER XII. [Newspaper Article] — The Kyabram Union and Rodney Shire Advocate — 9 November 1894

-ROMANCE AND ADVENTURE, (CoPvi rI r.) COLLEGE JACK. A REIARKABLE, YET TRUE STORY OF THE Penal Records of Yan Dieman's Land.' By CAPT.4I L CIE CHAPTER XII. " How you must have suffered, Tar leton !" said Dr. Ransome, in a sym pathetic tone. "Suffered I Yes. Yet my agony on the ocean, perishing with thirst with water all around-dying in a solitude which was awful, I tell you-amidst all that, my sufferings were not as great as during my bondage on the island. If I had my choice to-day I would take the former. I don't wonder now why convicts commit suicide or some mortal crime in order to get hanged. If I have to give myself up to the authori ties and escape the scaffold, I will surely do one or the other-kill myself or sotheone else," said the convict in a lugubrious tone, calculated to inspire sympathy. The fact was John Tarleton saw a chance of permanently regaining his liberty. His friend, Dr. Ransome, strange, to say, had a high opinion of him, and, notwithstanding the damning evid...
