Answers to Correspondents. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 24 July 1896

Answers to Corres pondents. [It.is not always possible to answer communications ' nnder this heading in the issue following receipt and sometimes several issues appear before we are able to do so.] F. M.— You'll think I'm a fraud, I know, for nob publishing your letter, but it would do no good, and it would be a slap in the face for a lot of people. It's no use me playing Don Quixote. There's a lot of evils in the world, and I used to fight against them to the neglect of my own home, but I try to shut my eyes now to what I can't mend. I've got to be practical, because— I've got to pay my board, and it's no use taking up a case like that. But that other thing I'm going for solid ! Try to think kindly of me in spite of this, for I do the best I can, but the limita tions are cruel. M. T. — Letters like yours do a man good ! As you say, it's ' only by the occasional expression of opinion ' from some of our readers that we can tell how things are going. One letter like youra is enough to...

Hay Selectors' Association. A CHANGE OF NAME. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 28 July 1896

Hay Selectors' As sociation. A CHANGE OF NAME. From the ' Riverina Grazier.' A meeting of the Selectors' As sociation was held in Tattersall's Hotel, Hay, on Thursday night last. There was a large attendance The President, Mr. W. J. Campbell, was in the chair. The report of the Hon. secretary, Mr. Chas. Hidgcock, was read and adopted. The secretary said that Mr. W. T. Lockwood had e;iven notice that he would move that the name of the Association should be changed to that of ' The Hay District Landholders' Association.' Mr Lockwood was not present but perhaps someone else would take the matter up. Mr. G. Sides said that he would move the motion in Mr. Lockwood's absence. He thought it a good one. It would make the basis of the associa tion broader. It was good to combine the big and the little men, as their interests were identical. Until squatters, selectors and homestead lessees worked together they would not accomplish much good. He had great pleasure in moving the re solution. Mr...

The Fisher Merinos SOME INTERESTING FACTS. The ' Queenslander ' says : — (i Some years ago the Fisher merinos held a very high place iu the estimation of many sheepownera and in the various show yards of the colonies ; but although the clip of the flock has all along maintained ics place as one of the best paying in Queensland, it ha-, by one of those freaks of fashion hard to un derstand, been relegated tu compara tive obscurity of recent ye:vrs in the show yards in favour of a description of wool which in the comparison with the Fisher wool ranks only as a medium of strength/ We have been favoured with the results of some tests made recently in Melbourne with fleeces of the clip which proves that it still holds pride of place in value per fleece, as the following will show : — llaui hogget's fleece, weighing 13-871b., scoured 7.531b., giving a percentage of 54£ clean to greasy wool. The fleece weighed 5.751b., giving 7s 10^d, and the pieces 1.781b., wurth Is 7|d ; total value of f...

A Clever Epitaph. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 28 July 1896

A Clever Epitaph. A few days ago I met a Scotchman who told me a story. Scotchmen have no sense of humor — at leash, it's said so, and this man was like unto the res!) of the ' parritch-eaters ' that I know. I asked him to write me the story and I'd n'x it up for publication, bnt it couldn't bo improved on, so here it is, letter and all, only the name's left out : — ' The story is that a certain banker, in thiDkinsr he would have a fling at the Chief Police Magistrate, wrote a scathing epitnph, having reference to judgments, punishments, and the evil time in stur6 for some people. The next morning, with his porridge, he got the following. He is changed now, and has since been learniug when considering advances to be as sober as a judge on a murder trial, and in granting them to be temperate unto excess. He hopes in time to be able to say ' No ' as pleasantly as if he were saying ' Yes.' ' [copy ] EPITAPH.

Our Book Review. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 28 July 1896

Our Book Review. The Mighty Atom, by Marie Corelli, author of the ' Sorrows of Satan,' etc. Thirtieth thousand. London : Hutchinson and Co., 34 Pater noster Row, 1896. Price, post free from this office 4s ckuh covers, 3a paper covers. Marie Oorelli and I don't hit h ; which is an exceedingly impertinent thing to say after writing about this v book 'thirtieth thousand.' Any book that has ' caught on ' to that extent must have pleased the popular taste, and Marie does that ; but, ail the same, I think she writes an awful lot of pure, unmitigated ' tommy-rot.' But she's clever, exceedingly clever ; and, what is more, she is popular and successful. It is good to have to review a book like this, because you fully realise that what you say won't hurt Marie, and what you say won't detract troni the sale of the book. The writer has brains ! It's a powerful book, one that makes a deep impres sion on even a careless reader. It is a ' book with a purpose,' which kind of book I detest as a rule...

Gossip. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 28 July 1896

Gossip. The other day I went a-visiting the Museum along with some little people who were preternaturally wise. A museum man was real good to us and took us into all manner of uncanny places where we drank deep draughts of wonder lore. A museum is a mar vellous place! Over the Alexandrian museum, which was built long cen turies ere Christ was born, they had the legend graven, ' A Treasury of Remedies for Diseases of the Soul.' That is a grand idea, for ignorance is a disease of the soul, more deadly than anthrax or consumption or any of the diseases that afflict) the mortal body. Bufe who cares for a museum ? Only the few ! We are not wise in our . generation. We be a mad race, my masters, a very mad race, spending our lives in foolish labor for the things that profit us not, and wasting our years in the pursuit of foolish pleasures that have no joy in them. In such a placo as the Museum there is that which maketh rich and addeth no sorrow. As we wandered from case to case and from ...
