M. Zola's Tenacity [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 20 May 1898

M. Zola's Tenacity Tenacity is certainly the dominant qualitiy of M. Emile Zola. To it he owes everything in life ; his success as an author, the admiration of his friends, the hatred of his enemie?, and the fact that during the last few weeks he has ; oeen ine mosu conspicuous ju^ujlc m jlj-oulujo ojaja* ? has fascinated the curiosity of the world. He i was not tenacious to his clerk's stool at Hachette's publishing house, because he had no affection for it but with what tenacity he held on to the scheme which he planned out when a very young man, of writing a series of natural istic novels all interrelated and based up on ihe theory of fatiliiy in regard to inherited tendeneies. and the doctrine of degeneration Although it was met by the supreme conjection that throughout nature there is a principle of v* covery from every kind of lesson, having once persuaded himself that be was making fiction scientific, he hammered away upon the same anvil year after year, sincerely believing t...

Ill-temper. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 20 May 1898

111= temper. It is in private life where the curse of ill temper falls with the greatest force, In the home, where there is no escape, to be shut up with an ill-tempered companion is to go down into the lowest depths of misery. The sunniest nature gets clouded by such gloomy companion ship, and, as to touch pitch is to be defiled, so as to rub shoulders with sourness and snappisn ness, causeless opposition and as causeless reproach, is to run the risk of going and doing likewise with the certainty of depression if of nothing worse. That sour face from morning to night drawn into the likeness of a mask ; that lugubrious voice; that tart reply; that whine ; that spiteful word ; that unkind and quite gratuitious opposition— how painful it all is. And when, added to these, we have per sonal power to translate the spirit into deeds, the limits of human forbearance are reached and the extremes of human aggressiveness are touched. It is wearisome to think of the number of homes which have ...

A Bridge Between Judaism and Christianity. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 27 May 1898

A Bridge Between Judaism and Christianity. One of the great but little known curiosities of literature is the Book of Pohar, the famous .hesarus of Jewish mysticism, the official ex ponent of the Kabbala of tradition of Judaism, It is claimed by those who recognise its high religions character and authority that it was prepared about the year 130 a.d. by Moses di Leon on the basis of the older productions, It has enjoyed great popularity and has even met with favour among the Christians, the popes who burned the Talmud encouraging the publication of Sohar on the ground that this book constituted a bridge between Judaism and Christianity. : In the 'Nathanael' (Berlin), Professor Dalman, of Leipsic, probably the greatest living authority in post-bibical Jewish litratuer, gives a synopsis of this unique book, and from th s source we glean the following; The Sohar is really a mystical commentary on the Pentateuch. Through allegorical in terpretation of the narratives, personages, and wo...
