COMMERCIAL. [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 26 August 1876

COMMERCIAL. Deniliquin Stock. Repoex, August 11.—All fears of drought in Southern Biverina .may now be regarded as at an end, ■ rain having fallen in suffi cient quantities to dispel any doubts as to scarcity of grass or water for some time to come. After several weeks of tantalising indications of rain that it seemed would never fall, it began to rain in earnest early on the morning of Saturday last. Fine rains also fell on Sundays Since then -cold weather has prevailed, and a few showers have fallen, bringing up the'total rainfall for the "week to 1.56 inches. From Wilcannia we.leam that there had been a few light showers, and: thj§re were threatening appear-' ances of nun. " The drought here has been very serious in its effects, and rain is greatly required Shearing is going on at Neilyambo, . Nocolyche, Mnrtae, and Billilla,- and commences «arly this month at Momba, Mount Murchisoh, and Wein teriga. The HlUcatmia Times contradicts a report that 50,000 sheep died on one .station ...

THE COMMERCIAL CONDITION OF ENGLAND. (From the Telegraph.) [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 2 September 1876

THE COMMERCIAL CONDITION OF ^ENGLAND. (From the Telegraph.) The present commercial condition of Eng land, and indeed of the whole world, is very peculiar. By latest cablegrams we learn that the Bank of England rate of discount is 2 per cent., while good trade bills are being negociated in the open market at 1 per cent. With money thus cheap, there is, strange to say, according to latest mail advices, an almost total absence of speculation—foreign and colonial securities, bank and railway stock, and the prices of goods ranging lower than there appears any warrant for. Wool, the article in which we in Queensland are most interested, has certainly recovered to some extent from the recent remarkable fall in price, and this is a source of congratula tion ; but taking the aspect of trade in the great centres of commerce altogether, there is nothing perceptable to relieve the feeling of mistrust and anxiety with which business men seem to be so strongly tinctured. Bankers, although holding...
